Self-employed for three decades, Ms. Hauptman is a communications executive whose career began in 1961. Hired as a reporter for the Rome Daily Sentinel, in Rome, NY, she also became its television editor. She subsequently transitioned in and out of roles as a freelancer, editor for a Hudson Valley environmental publication in Poughkeepsie, NY, and co-founder of Five Strings Productions in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, producing publications for major corporations. In 1997, she founded Hauptman Communications, which also served a range of organizations and corporations, including the Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau in Gainesville, FL, 2001-2011.
To support her local community, Ms. Hauptman served as a member of the Conservation Advisory Council in Croton-on-Hudson between 1978 and 1990. She was a coordinator for 18 years for the Clearwater Hudson River Revival for Clearwater, Inc., headquartered in Poughkeepsie, and served on its board as well as on its executive committee. She was a volunteer ecology instructor for Westchester County Parks in New York, from 1988 to 1991, and reported election night coverage on Croton Channel 26 in 1988-89. In 1984, Westchester Spotlight magazine honored her as one of its 84 People on the Move.
While attending high school, Ms. Hauptman, valedictorian of her class, was editor of her high school newspaper. She enjoyed the experience so much she decided to study public relations in college. Accepted to Syracuse University, she attended its school of journalism, where she was honored as outstanding junior and as outstanding senior woman in journalism. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in 1960. Ms. Hauptman later earned a Master of Arts in English and creative writing at Stony Brook, State University of New York, in 1996 while working full-time.
Ms. Hauptman's career was supported by memberships with several professional organizations. A co-founder of a chapter of Women in Communications in Westchester County, she served as its vice president of public relations from 1982 to 1984. She was also active with the National Writers Union's Westchester-Fairfield chapter as co-editor of its publication and as a speaker at its workshop writers' conferences in 1990 and 1994. She enjoyed membership in the Gainesville chapter, American Pen Women. She is president of the Gainesville (FL) branch of the American Association of University Women, 2019-2021. To widen her perspectives, she has trekked through the jungles of northern Thailand and walked the slums of Nairobi.
