After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from Xavier University, Dr. Cmolik wanted to enroll in medical school in order to become a pediatrician. However, he shifted his attention toward anatomy and surgical science upon entering medical school and decided to switch career paths. Dr. Cmolik eventually earned a Doctor of Medicine from Northeastern Ohio Medical University before beginning his career as a staff heart surgeon at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
Dr. Cmolik further flourished at the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System as a staff heart surgeon and a chief of cardiothoracic surgery. He also served as the chief of surgery service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center before accepting his current position as the chief of staff for the Northeast Ohio Veteran Affairs Health System. In addition to his primary role, Dr. Cmolik also excelled as a senior associate dean for veterans affairs at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Over the years, Dr. Cmolik has gained expertise in cardiothoracic surgery in adults, conducting research in adult ischemic heart issues as well as heart failure, artificial lungs, cardiac surgical applications and mechanisms and myocardial protection. As the chief of staff, he manages an organization of about 4,000 employees that is worth about $1 billion. For his exceptional skills, he has been nominated for the Sampson Award from the Western Thoracic Society, the Young Investigators Award and the Caves Award from the Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Dr. Cmolik also received the Golden Stethoscope from the Medical College at Pennsylvania.
Dr. Cmolik has attributes his professional success to hard work and valuable relationships. He has always strived to create a better path for future generations of medical professionals who will follow in his footsteps. Throughout his career, Dr. Cmolik has been most proud of his work to expand delivery of services to veterans in northeastern Ohio despite challenges presented at many angles.
Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Cmolik volunteers as a youth basketball and baseball coach. He maintains his professional affiliation with the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Cmolik is also a member of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and the Eastern Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
