Dr. Weems currently excels as the Willard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History at Wichita State University. Before joining the faculty at Wichita State, he gained valuable expertise as an education professional at the University of Missouri, where he served as a professor of history, as well as interim associate vice chancellor for equity, His earlier instructional experiences were at the University of Iowa, the Milwaukee Public Schools and Middlesex Community College (in Boston).
With a long-standing interest in history, Dr. Weems pursued numerous degrees in this field. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Western Illinois University in 1973, a Master of Arts in Afro-American studies from Boston University in 1975, a Master of Arts in History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1982 and a Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987. Dedicated to furthering his historical knowledge, Dr. Weems' professional affiliations include the Organization of American Historians, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the Business History Conference.
A champion of his community, Dr. Weems serves on the Board of Directors of the Kansas African American Museum and the Heartland Wichita Black Chamber of Commerce. Through the latter, he helped establish the "Wichita Black Business Hall of Fame." Supported by his considerable expertise, Dr. Weems has authored several books, including "Black Business in the Black Metropolis: The Chicago Metropolitan Assurance Company, 1925-1985," "Desegregating the Dollar: African American Consumerism in the Twentieth Century," "Business in Black and White: American Presidents and Black Entrepreneurs in the Twentieth Century" and "Building the Black Metropolis: African American Entrepreneurship in Chicago." His most recent book is "The Merchant Prince of Black Chicago: Anthony Overton and the Building of a Financial Empire. "Professor Weems' books are readily available on Amazon.
Dr. Weems also served as a historical advisor and appeared in the documentary, "Boss: The African American Experience in Business," which premiered on PBS in 2019. Due to his professional excellence, he has been acknowledged numerous times, earning a feature in Who's Who in America, a recognition as a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional and an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Looking toward the future, Dr. Weems intends to continue working on his next project, a history of National Insurance Association (established as the National Negro Insurance Association), while looking forward to retirement.
