An esteemed attorney and partner in the litigation department at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Mr. Russell focuses his practice on representing public and private companies, financial institutions and other clients in matters involving commercial disputes. He also has overseen the firm's Pro Bono Committee as its co-chairperson and has represented pro bono clients in various matters including housing, education and discrimination cases. He currently co-chairs the firm's Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Mr. Russell was hired as an associate at the international law firm's New York City location in 1990 and was elevated to partner in 1999.
Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Mr. Russell has tried numerous state and federal cases involving securities, contractual disputes, bankruptcy and restructuring matters, lender liability and more. In a career suffused with highlights, he was most proud of his involvement in a pro bono case representing the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. After seven long months and several appeals, Mr. Russell and his team were able to secure billions in additional funding on behalf of New York City's public school children. Another substantial victory included a $168 million trial judgment on behalf of a large financial institution in a case involving an interest rate derivative transaction.
Mr. Russell has co-authored the New York Law Journal's monthly column, "New York Court of Appeals Roundup," which expounds upon the various decisions of New York's highest court. He has also presented as a featured speaker and expert in his field before, among others, the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute in 2012 and 2014. Active with several significant public and charitable activities, Mr. Russell has served as the vice chair of the Board of Legal Services NYC and as the board chair of Manhattan Legal Services. He also serves on the boards of Legal Outreach Inc., and the National Center for Access to Justice, the New York Bar Foundation and the Center for Community Alternatives.
Mr. Russell received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Princeton University in 1987. Continuing his education, he earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence at New York University School of Law in 1990. Mr. Russell has been admitted to practice law by the State of New York, the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York and the District of Arizona, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second and Fourth Circuits and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Russell serves on the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association and is a member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association. Among other professional organizations, he has also been active on the board of directors of the Lawyers Alliance for New York, as the chair of the Committee on Pro Bono and Legal Services of the New York City Bar Association, and as the co-chairperson of the New York State Bar Association's President's Committee on Access to Justice. As a testament to his success, Mr. Russell has been acknowledged with an Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award from the Legal Aid Society and a Visionary Leadership Award for Pro Bono and Public Service from Manhattan Legal Services. He has also been recognized by numerous legal publications, including as a Litigation Star by The Legal 500 and in New York Super Lawyers.
