Capsule
Mr. Acciardo, who before earning his Doctorate, served as an Assistant Professor, convening Business Law and Finance courses -from 1979 to 1988 -at several educational institutions, including Russell Sage Colleges (Troy & Albany, NY) and Stonehill College (South Easton, MA). Then, after intermittent stints in Business and the Legal Profession, and while pursuing two additional graduate degrees, he finalized his academic career, by teaching an Enlightenment class at Fordham University in 2008.
Striking Characteristic. Whilst then a young man, Raymond Acciardo was awarded a place in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities 1963-64; he represented the University of Rhode Island and his listing illustrates many outstanding accomplishments. After a break of 57 years with a record of amazing achievement layered in between, he was nominated for Who's Who in America, 2020-21.
Military Service
A jack of all trades, Dr. Acciardo has successfully worked in several industries throughout his career, including education, business and law. However, before embarking on his professional ventures, he completed service in the U.S. military, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1958 alongside his brother, Charles. Due to his high-test scores, he was granted the opportunity to choose what school he attended within the military. Inspired by the launch of Sputnik a year earlier, new enlistee Acciardo decided to study nuclear weapons. His program of study combined 20 weeks of schooling. First, an 8-week course at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, near Chicago, IL. This was followed by a 3-month program of Intensive Study on the Nike Hercules Missile, at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM.
Upon successful completion - second phase - of 12 weeks' coursework, Seaman Acciardo was transferred to Clarksville Base in Tennessee, where he worked on the maintenance, repair, and readiness of the Nike Hercules Missile. During the late 1950s and 1960, he served on active duty before returning home to take care of his ailing mother with an honorable discharge for humanitarian reasons. Afterwards, through much of the 1970's, he rejoined the Naval Reserves, as a part-timer, to accumulate overall about 9 years of active and inactive military duty.
Education and Work/Teaching Experience
Following his release from active duty, Petty Officer Acciardo was readmitted to URI and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in 1964; he was in the Honors Program in Business Economics, graduating (within 3 years) in the top 7% of his class from the University of Rhode Island. Five years later, he got an MBA (master's in business administration) in International Trade and Finance from Babson College, 1969, Wellesley, MA. Similarly, he compiled a notable record of attainment at Babson.
Backed by his economics and financial expertise, Dr. Acciardo accepted a position with Old Colony Trust, a division of the National Bank of Boston, as a trust real estate officer, analyzing office, residential and commercial properties. Based upon his father's unforgettable urging and motivation; he still, nevertheless, dedicated himself to furthering his legal knowledge. Thus inspired, he obtained the Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree from Suffolk University Law School (Boston) in 1978. Once he gained Bar membership, in three states, Raymond excelled in private practice, specializing in criminal law and real estate matters. Additionally, he parlayed his expertise to others as an assistant professor of finance and business for Southeastern Massachusetts University, Stonehill College, Russell Sage Women's College, Tekyio Post University, Raritan Valley Community College and Fordham University's Rose Hill Campus. Moreover, before earning his Doctorate in Medieval History, Mr. Acciardo gained valuable work experience with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, where he was given his own office as an SPSO (Single Person Sales Office), because of his unique experience in Financial Planning and then served as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Millennium Securities, in NYC.
Notwithstanding these accolades, he was not done yet! After the tum of the century, Dr. Acciardo continued his education, accruing a Master of Arts in social studies from Lehman College, at Manhattan in 2002 and thence his ultimate goal attaining Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) in medieval history from Drew University, Madison, NJ, in 2007. Two years later, he completed postdoctoral studies at King's College in London. At this stage, it could be said, he was a man of 5 and 1/2, degrees! To remain aware of changes in the field, he has been affiliated with the Columbia's Council of European Studies, the International Commission for the History of Representative & Parliamentary Institutions, and became a member of NAFSA, an International Education Association. During his spare time, and while with his Brazilian wife, Dr. Acciardo frequently contributed to his community as a diplomatic coordinator with two other colleagues to numerous Embassies on behalf of the Baha'i Faith in Brazil.
With a plethora of knowledge to his credit, Dr. Acciardo has presented his research to a number of publications and presentations over the years, including "Constantine and his Donation: The Architect of Two Great Metropolises," which was presented at the 31st Annual Conference on Patristic, Medieval & Renaissance Studies at Villanova University. From the Legal standpoint, considering his outstanding body of work, he was honored with a Celebration of Courageous Plaintiffs Award for his involvement in his wrongful discharge case (whistle blower) that won him an Arbitration Award from NASD.
With this unbelievable record compiled by Dr. Acciardo, one might think his family obligations and responsibilities would be overlooked! Quite the opposite: an enduring strong family man; he and his first wife are most proud of the fact that they raised four beautiful children and managed to see them all graduate from colleges of their choosing. Soon, he intends to dedicate more quality time to his two families, both here and in Brazil.
As the sole surviving member of a family of five; he fondly remembers during his childhood and teenage years his father's oft-repeated admonition before his Italian family: "how long does it take to become a lawyer (?); followed by until you become a lawyer...you are n.th..g!
He wrote his dissertation at Drew's Casperson School of Graduate Studies on: "Testing the Limits on the 'Donation of Constantine:' 'Linking a Forgery to the Rise of the Medieval Papal States." Here his inspiration for Ancient and Medieval History was drawn a High School history teacher -Edmund Cappaccilli -who often raged and fumed about the infamous and feared King Nebuchadnezzar. Raymond was a 1957 graduate of Warren (RI) high school. His class and in particular all football players on the 1956 Co-Championship team of which he was a member were duly honored by the Town and State officials, becoming members of the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame.
