Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable expertise in his chosen field, Dr. Cloninger earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of finance and economics at the University of Houston at Clear Lake upon his retirement in 2006. He initially joined the Texas faculty in 1974 as an associate professor and previously worked for nine years at the University of South Florida in Tampa as an instructor of economics. During his tenure at the University of Houston, he served as the director of programs in accounting and finance, as an associate dean and as the interim dean of the school of business. However, he much preferred teaching because he was able to invest more of his time in research, which he found extremely satisfying. Prior to his work in academia, Dr. Cloninger enjoyed two years as a field engineer for General Telephone of Florida between 1962 and 1964 and another year as a consultant for Southern Bell Telephone in Atlanta, until 1965.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Cloninger consulted extensively. Some of his clients included Florida Federal Savings in Saint Petersburg, the Florida State Legislature in Tallahassee and various law firms in Houston. He also excelled as a designer of business and economic activity index on behalf of the Florida Federal Savings and Loan and was an economic and financial evaluator, where he provided expert testimony in civil suits of personal injury, lost profits and asset evaluations. Additionally, Dr. Cloninger was active on the accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
As a seasoned researcher and presenter in his field, Dr. Cloninger focused his studies on the economics of crime and law enforcement. He has contributed over 40 articles to various scholarly journals as a result, served as a referee to several of these publications, including the Journal of Applied Economics and the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and has contributed opinion columns to multiple periodicals since 1973. Dr. Cloninger has published several books as well, including "The Economics of Crime and Law Enforcement" in 1972, and recently released his latest novel, "The Ninth Passage" through Newman Springs Publishing in 2019.
To support his illustrious career, Dr. Cloninger has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he has been a member of the American Financial Association, the American Economic Association, the Financial Management Association, the Southern Financial Association, and the Southern Economic Association. Likewise, Dr. Cloninger is a member of the honor society of Beta Gamma Sigma.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Cloninger received a Bachelor of Science in industrial management at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he earned a Master of Business Administration at Emory University in 1965, followed by a Doctor of Business Administration at Florida State University in 1973. In 1981, Dr. Cloninger was bestowed with a Best Paper Award from J. Risk & Insurance. He is a former fellow of NASA and Emory University.
