Mr. Hasan is a professional chaplain celebrating nearly three decades of offering spiritual care, support and guidance to adult and pediatric patients, families and staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is proud to be the first board-certified Muslim chaplain to join the Association of Professional Chaplains and hopes to use his position to spread awareness and foster positivity towards Muslims in the health care system, from dietary and food service requirements to the inclusion of safe and appropriate prayer spaces for patients, families and staff. Raised by a religious family, Mr. Hasan grew up watching his grandmother serve as a spiritual and community leader and admired the stability and direction that she was able to provide with empathy and compassion to so many.
Mr. Hasan attended Adelphi University School of Nursing and is a board-certified dietary manager and consider his shift into chaplaincy to have been a "steady progression" towards a calling, rather than a conscious choice. He began his chaplaincy internship in 1991 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and was hired in 1994 by HealthCare Chaplaincy Network, a nonprofit organization providing and advocating for medical chaplain care. Mr. Hasan has contributed his unique perspective to numerous publications articles and book chapters, including " On the Ground after 9/11: Mental Health Responses and Practical Knowledge Gained" in 2005,", "A Time for Listening and Caring for the Chronically Ill and Dying" in 2006 and "Disaster Spiritual Care: Practical Clergy Responses to Community, Regional, and National Tragedy" in 2011.
Mr. Hasan is a longtime member of the Historical Masjid Malcolm Shabazz in Harlem, NY, founded upon the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, where he serves on the Juneteenth Celebration Committee and has been the recipient of an award from the Masjid community for his work in teaching orientation class. Since 2013, Mr. Hasan has served as the chairman of the African American Day Parade, Inc. Throughout his career, Mr. Hasan has been honored with numerous accolades for his groundbreaking work, including a Sister Delores Solomon Award and a New York City Council citation for his dedication to service. He is a frequent speaker and presenter at conferences for chaplains and health care professionals, and has appeared in local and national print, television and radio, including PBS' Religion and Ethics News Weekly, NBC Nightly News and Newsweek Magazine. He is active in the National American Red Cross Spiritual Care Response Team and is the former chair of the Association of Professional Chaplains' Diversity Task Force. Mr. Hasan attributes his success to his passion for his work and a sense that he is working with GOD's purpose for him and his community and patients.
