Mr. Gifford has accumulated nearly six decades of expertise in academia as an expert in antitrust and administrative law. After teaching as an assistant professor of law at Vanderbilt University for four years, and as a professor of law at the State University of New York in Buffalo for more than a decade, he joined the law faculty of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1977. Teaching various courses over the next 40 years, including antitrust, administrative law, and intellectual property, Mr. Gifford was named the Julius E. Davis professor of law and later the Robins Kaplan professor of law. He is now a professor emeritus.
A prominent figure in his field, Mr. Gifford worked in the initial stages of his career as an associate attorney at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York City between 1958 and 1962. He later served a s a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania and was a visiting fellow at the University of Warwick in England. Mr. Gifford also taught courses at the Free University of Brussels, the University of Lyons in France and the University of Uppsala in Sweden.
Early in his career, Mr. Gifford had developed an interest in antitrust law, publishing casebooks with Leo J. Raskind in that field in 1983, 1998 and 2002. He also published casebooks in administrative law in 1992 and 2010. Mr. Gifford has also contributed numerous articles and book chapters to various professional journals and books on antitrust, administrative law and intellectual property. Recently, he published, with his co-author, Robert T. Kudrle, a comparative study of the US and the EU antitrust laws entitled, The Atlantic Divide in Antitrust: An Examination of US and EU Competition Policy (University of Chicago Press 2015).
Mr. Gifford completed a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at Holy Cross College in 1953. He subsequently served in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1953 and 1955, before earning a Bachelor of Laws, cum laude, at Harvard. He spent a year at Columbia University as a Ford fellow and, upon completion of his dissertation was awarded a Doctor of Judicial Science by that University.
Mr. Gifford was a member of the American Law Institute, the American Bar Association, and the Minnesota State Bar Association, where he served a term as chairperson of the antitrust section and was a longtime member of the administrative law section. He also served a term as executive committee member of the Association of American Law Schools. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Gifford has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in American Law.
