Embarking on a long and successful career more than 45 years ago, Dr. Kelman is a renowned toxicologist who currently serves as the senior vice president for J.S. Held LLC in Redmond. Headquartered in New York; the global consulting firm is composed of world-renowned experts who collectively analyze and investigate issues and disputes and provide solutions to complex matters faced by the legal, construction, surety, manufacturing, and insurance communities. Recruited to J.S. Held LLC in 2019, Dr. Kelman leverages his expertise by contributing to projects throughout North America, as well as in South Korea and the U.K.
Dr. Kelman is responsible for evaluating claims of personal injury and health impacts from many chemicals and drugs and presenting a variety of health risk concepts to policy makers, government regulators, citizen groups, and individuals. He is also responsible for interpreting standard and non-standard tests for drugs of abuse including ethanol, opioids, methamphetamine, cocaine, and cannabis. More recently, Dr. Kelman has also dedicated time toward assisting in safety issues caused by COVID-19.
Prior to his present position, Dr. Kelman served as the president of Veritox Inc., from 2005 to 2019. before Veritox Inc. became a part of J.S. Held. He was served as the president of GlobalTox Inc. in Redmond from 1998 to 2005. Veritox Inc. was a health-based consulting company that focused on toxicology and industrial hygiene. Among other noteworthy roles, Dr. Kelman served as Manager of Toxicology and Risk Assessment and the National Director of Health and Environmental Sciences for Golder Associates, Inc. in Redmond as well as in research and management roles within Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories n Richland, Washington, for more than a decade.
Apart from his primary commitments in the field, Dr. Kelman contributed to his profession in the classroom as an adjunct professor at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces between 1983 and 2004. As a seasoned researcher, he has published in over 130 scientific journals and other publications, served on the National Research Council/National Academy of Science, Committee on Possible Effects of Electromagnetic Fields on Biologic Systems and as a member of the External Advisory Board of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington DC.
An alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana, Dr. Kelman obtained a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and a Doctor of Philosophy between 1969 and 1975. He is further registered as a European Registered Toxicologist and certified in toxicology by the American Board of Toxicology. Moreover, Dr. Kelman served on the advisory council for the Seattle Fire Department between 1988 and 1990 and the advisory committee for the Washington Governor's Biotechnology Targeted Sector from 1989 and 1990.
An elected Fellow of the American Academy of Toxicological Sciences, and the American Academy of Veterinary and Comparative Toxicology, Dr. Kelman has also served on other professional and industry organizations during his career. He served on the board of directors for the American Board of Toxicology from 2011 to 2015 and as the founding President of the Molecular Biology Specialty Section and President of the Metals Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. Other memberships to Dr. Kelman's credit include the Academy of Toxicology Sciences, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the American College of Medical Toxicology, the British Toxicology Society and the American College of Toxicology.
Celebrated for his years of success, Dr. Kelman was honored with a Certificate of Recognition from the Society of Toxicology in 1989 and an Award of Merit from the northwest chapter of the Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine in 1980. He was additionally presented with a Best IAQ-Related Paper Award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association in 2001 and a Best Paper Award from the nanotoxicology specialty section of the Society of Toxicology in 2010.
