Dr. Thomas Charles Hood has received numerous grants through the Westinghouse Electric Corp., Martin Marietta, the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the United States Information Agency.

Supported by nearly four decades of professional excellence in sociology and academia, Dr. Hood has been holding the title of professor emeritus in the department of sociology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville since 2004, having previously served as a professor of sociology from 1985 to 2004. Prior to this appointment, he was an associate professor, assistant professor and instructor between 1965 and 1985. During his tenure, Dr. Hood also served the university as a department head from 1984 to 1991 and executive officer of the Society for the Study of Social Problems from 1990 to 2009.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Hood was a member of the Board of Higher Education and Ministries with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church in Johnson City from 1984 to 1992 and was a president of the faculty senate at the University of Tennessee between 1988 and 1991. Likewise, he was a review team member of the Graduate Program in Ecology at the university in 1989. Civically involved as well, Dr. Hood is active with the United Methodist Church and the Knox County 4-H Club programs having served as a leader for over 40 years.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Hood pursued formal education at Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He then attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, earning a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1964 and 1969, respectively. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he authored "The Goffman Lectures" with Dwight Van de Vate in 2017 and published a book of poems entitled "Circumstances, Conundrums and Commoners" that same year. In an effort to remain abreast of developments in the field, Dr. Hood maintains affiliation with numerous organizations, such as the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Society, where he served as president from 1993 to 1995, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Likewise, he was the president of the Popular Culture Association in the South and a member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. Dr. Hood has sat on the steering committee of the Christian Sociological Association since 1979.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Hood has received numerous grants through the Westinghouse Electric Corp., Martin Marietta, the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the United States Information Agency. He was also notably named Hometown Hero in Knoxville in 2015. Married with three children, Dr. Hood enjoys photography, writing poetry, singing, gardening and woodworking in his spare time.
