OXFORD, MS, October 20, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James Robert Hall with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Professor Hall celebrates forty years of experience in the field of English language and literature. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Such factors as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are taken into account.
In 1960, at the age of fourteen, James Robert Hall entered St. Andrew's Seminary in Rochester, NY, to study for the Catholic priesthood. Six years later, he changed direction and majored in Economics at St. John Fisher College. After graduating in 1968, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame, from which he earned an M.A. in English in 1970 and a Ph.D. in English in 1973.
In 1973-1974, Dr. Hall served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; in fall 1975, he taught English at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. After postdoctoral work in Linguistics at Indiana University, he joined the Department of English at the University of Mississippi in 1978 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1984 and to full professor in 1990. On his retirement in 2012, he was granted the title Emeritus Professor of English.
During his career, Professor Hall served as an articles referee for eleven academic periodicals and a book referee for twelve academic publishers. For fifteen years he also served as a grants consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities. He also won national research grants from the Earhart Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Harvard Mellon Program. He is credited with more than eighty publications in the field of Anglo-Saxon studies. In 2021 the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies will publish Old English Tradition: Essays in Honor of J. R. Hall, edited by Dr. Lindy Brady.
Outside the classroom, Professor Hall served as faculty advisor to the Ole Miss College Republicans (1996-2012) and as a member of the Lafayette County Republican Executive Committee (2002-12). His name is also engraved on the Wall of Fame at Mississippi Blood Services, Oxford, in recognition of his donating some eighty pints of blood. Throughout his life Professor Hall has been a practicing Roman Catholic.
