Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Distinguished educator and scholar, Dr. Spinks was a Trinity University English department faculty emeritus. He taught at Trinity from 1970 until his retirement in 2004. During his career he designed and taught a variety of courses in literature, mythology, composition, creative writing and semiotics. The course he created and taught in science fiction writing was one of the first to be introduced at the university level in the United States. A leading semiotician and member of the Semiotic Society of America, he served as editor of the proceedings for the society in the 1990's and as its president in 2004 and 2005.
Dr. Spinks graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts. He earned a Master of Arts in 1965 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1970 from the University of Nebraska. His many publications include poetry, articles and books. Dedicated to making the world a better place, he was an active member of University Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and a deacon, as well as ambassador for the Source of Light Center. He helped to edit the church website. Always a committed mentor to his students, he continued this after retirement by mentoring children at Beacon Hill Elementary School. Deeply concerned about our environment, in retirement he founded Raven's Mud Project, dedicated to recycling and refurbishing computers for people in need. He also taught courses for the Sol-Center exploring environmental issues.
