Now retired, Dr. Dees enjoyed a fulfilling career in internal medicine that spanned more than four and a half decades. Active in private practice between 1962 and 2007 as part of MedProvider, a medical group in Dallas, he worked alongside two talented business partners, Dr. Caray King and Dr. Ben Merrick. Dr. Dees was also affiliated with Baylor Medical Center in Dallas as an attending physician, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as a clinical assistant professor of medicine. Additionally, he accumulated 20 years as the director and managing partner of the Swiss Avenue Medical Building in Dallas from 1984 until 2004. In retirement, Dr. Dees has continued to serve the industry as a regional medical consultant on disability claims and social security matters since 2010.
Fortunate to have excelled in his career for so many years, Dr. Dees has been greatly influenced by several significant professionals. Most notably, he had the great pleasure to be mentored by Dr. Carlton Chapman, a cardiologist, Donald Seldin, the former head of the department of medicine at Southwestern, Dr. John Chapman, professor at UTSMS, and several individuals from Bellevue Hospital, including Drs. Dickinson Richards and Novelle Areote. During an early stage of his professional journey, Dr. Dees contributed extensively as a civic advocate on behalf of his community. In addition to his activity with the Boy Scouts of America in Dallas as a member of the district commission, he also spent time with the Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas.
Inspired to study medicine by his uncle, who was a dental practitioner, Dr. Dees pursued a formal education at Johns Hopkins University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. He subsequently attained a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1956. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City between 1957 and 1959 and a research fellowship in cardiology at Southwestern Medical School in 1961. Dr. Dees also served two years in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of a captain from 1959 until 1961.
To support his professional endeavors, Dr. Dees has been an active member of the American Medical Association and the American Society Internal Medicine and is a life member of the American College of Physicians. He is also a past president of the Texas Club of Internists and past president of the South Texas Johns Hopkins Alumni Association.
