MIDDLE RIVER, MD, October 23, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Surinder Singh has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Singh is a psychologist and a retired gymnast who worked with the American Friends Service Committee to provide community education, outreach and legal activism to South Asian immigrants in the Baltimore area. He represented three times at the National Gymnastics championship in India and received state recognition for his athletic accomplishments in 1979. Dr. Singh continued his passion for gymnastics as a coach, earning a Bachelor's of Arts in Physical Education from Punjabi University, a Master's of Arts from Jiwaji University and a diploma in gymnastics coaching from National Institute of Sports. He returned to Punjabi University to continue his education through the 1980s, earning two Masters of Arts degrees in English and physical education, a post graduate diploma in computer science and a Doctorate in sports science.
Since 2005, Dr. Singh has worked with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) as a community organizer and human rights educator for the organization's Project Voice initiative. He organizes community workshops and events for South Asian immigrants to provide leadership training, information about labor rights, immigration law and Green Card campaigns. His advocacy efforts have included the creation of an anti-REAL ID ACT information campaign, ongoing Punjabi-language newsletters and articles on topics in immigration, acting as a liaison with Baltimore's Sikh community, and raising more than $60,000 to benefit the AFSC and similar projects. Dr. Singh is a volunteer lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, providing Pulse biofeedback training through the school's Johns Hopkins Free University program.
In addition to his community-based work, Dr. Singh is the director of Avancer Tek, an information technology consulting company where he has been a leader since 2014. He has been recognized with awards from the Punjab government in 1997 and 2019, a Best Citizen of India Award in 2004, and a Certificate of Commendation from the Governor of Maryland in recognition of his work in the South Asian immigrant community. Well recognized for his scholarly output, he has published in both Punjabi and English, with numerous articles appearing in the Punjab Times and India America Today. He has presented scientific papers at conferences in Portugal, Australia and the United States. Dr. Singh attributes his success to his faith, and encourages youth to study and remain active in politics. Within five years, he hopes to further serve the Baltimore South Asian community and open a community center library and athletic facility. He is a very successful administrator. As principal he added four institutions in education - three in India and one in the USA. Dr. Singh is further planning a Khalsa Punjabi School at Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan.
