Dr. Terlaky is a George N. and Soteria Keldaras endowed chair professor who has been teaching at Lehigh University from 2008, and served as the Chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering from 2008 to 2017. His wealth of expertise in academia has included appointments at McMaster University in Canada, where he was Canada Research Chair in Optimization and served as the founding director of the School of Computation Engineering and Science, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Eötvös University in Budapest, Hungary. Prior to teaching, he contributed for three years as an operations research specialist for Hungarian Oil and Gas Trust in Budapest between 1979 and 1981. Presently, Dr. Terlaky excels as the president and co-founder of OPTAMO, Optimization and Modeling Solutions, a software development and consulting firm. Located in Bethlehem, the company specializes in optimizing business processes for correctional systems.
In the early stages of his career, Dr. Terlaky began studying pure mathematics. However, because he enjoyed solving problems, he eventually pursued operations research. He also began studying optimization, scientific computing, production planning, maintenance, scheduling and practical management application problems, and eventually began researching applied areas of mathematics, such as nuclear reactor optimization and cancer treatment optimization. Some of Dr. Terlaky's current research interests include high performance optimization methods, optimization modeling, optimization problems in engineering sciences and quantum computing optimization. As an expert in his field, he has notably lectured at numerous universities and at more than 200 conferences in such cities as London, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Zurich and Beijing.
A prolific author, Dr. Terlaky co-authored four, and edited nine books, including "Interior Point Methods in Mathematical Programming" in 1996. He has contributed chapters to several books, as well as over 180 articles to international mathematical journals on topics such as theoretical and algorithmic foundations of operations research, computational optimization and nuclear reactor core reloading optimization. Dr. Terlaky was also the founding editor-in-chief of Optimization and Engineering, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, an associate editor for eight other scholarly journals and an editor for multiple conference proceedings.
Born in Hungary, Dr. Terlaky received a Master of Science in mathematics in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in operations research in 1981 at Eötvös University in Budapest, followed by a Candidate of Science at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1985. He later attained both a Habilitation at Pannon University in Hungary and a Doctor of Science at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2005. Dr. Terlaky was named as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Fields Institute, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is a member of the Mathematical Optimization Society, the Hungarian Operations Research Society, the Canadian Operations Research Society (CORS), and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). Dr. Terlaky has been serving as the Vice President of meetings for INFORMS since 2019.
Recognized with several awards throughout his career, Dr. Terlaky received the Farkas Award from the Bolyai Mathematical Society of Hungary, the Egerváry Award from the Hungarian Operations Research Society, the Award of Merit from the Canadian Operational Research Society and the Wagner Prize from INFORMS. Among other accolades, he earned the2019 Outstanding Innovation in Service Science Engineering Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Terlaky has been featured in the 64th edition of Who's Who in America and the 11th and 16th editions of Who's Who in America.
