For more than three decades, Dr. Wang has excelled as an educator and researcher focusing on next-generation thin film coatings and renewable energy engineering. Inspired by his father, Jinguang Wang, a professor of physics at Hangzhou University, the younger man knew that he would pursue a career in science, and chose to pursue engineering after an early career experience as an electrician. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the Harbin Naval Engineering Institute, he earned a Master of Science in physics from Hangzhou University in 1981. Dr. Wang taught at the Hangzhou Naval School while completing his graduate studies at Hangzhou University, and served as a physics lecturer at the Hangzhou University from 1981 until 1984.
Dr. Wang relocated to the United States in 1982 to pursue doctoral studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In this capacity, he served as a research assistant in the school's physics department between 1984 and 1987, and was bestowed with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1987, with research in superfluid thin films. He then became a postdoctoral research associate at Buffalo between 1987 and 1988, working on superconductor thin films. Following this appointment, he joined the faculty of Alfred State University in 1988, and eventually rose to the position of a full professor in 1997. Dr. Wang has also distinguished himself as an invited faculty member at such facilities as the United States Air Force Civil Engineering Laboratory and the DOE Argonne National Laboratory, and has published more than 100 scientific papers and journal articles throughout his career.
Throughout the course of his research, Dr. Wang has been awarded 45 United States patents for novel processes and materials, primarily in the area of thin film coating. Well regarded for his qualities in mentorship, he notably serves as an advisor to students who are just beginning to learn the basics of science and engineering, and assists them in attaining reproducible results in their experimentation. Dr. Wang is active in the American Physical Society, and looks forward to continuing his research and teaching at Alfred University, with an emphasis on continued innovation in teaching.
