Dr. Howell, an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University, is a respected teacher, environmental scholar, and writer who has enjoyed a diverse career for more than five decades. Aligned with the university in the department of English since 2003, she has taught various courses such as Introduction to Academic Reading and Writing, Freshman English and First Year Seminar. Originally a microbiologist, she transitioned into law as the Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois in Chicago in the Environmental Control Division. Dr. Howell's experience led to appointments in academia, attaining roles at Boston University, Vermont Law School's Environmental Law Center, Branford Hall Career Institute, as well as several other institutions throughout the Northeast. She ultimately resumed residence in Connecticut, where she has been teaching for more than 15 years.
A seasoned researcher and writer, Dr. Howell has contributed numerous nonfictional and fictional works. To wit, she authored Intellectual Properties and the Protection of Fictional Characters. Scientific Literacy and Environmental Policy, Ecology for Environmental Professionals and Environmental Stewardship: Images from Popular Culture. Her most recent book Where You Can Hear the Sea and See the Sound, which was published in 2016, is the story of MacFarland, a Scots Highlander whose identity is altered by forced exiles. It takes place in 17th-century Connecticut, during the Pequot War between the Pequots and English colonists. Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Howell has also been active on numerous committees, and has participated at various conferences, seminars and lectures, coving topics such as law, the environment and academia.
Dr. Howell received a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences at Goucher College in 1962, followed by a Master of Science in botany at the University of Connecticut in 1967 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at John Marshall Law School in 1975. Years later, she attended Antioch University New England, where she received a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Studies in 2003. She has been admitted to practice law by the Illinois Bar Association. Among her professional memberships, Dr. Howell is active with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, the Stony Creek Museum and the Guilford Keeping Society.
