PORTOLA VALLEY, CA, October 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Bliss Carnochan, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Carnochan celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An accomplished professor of over three and a half decades, Dr. Carnochan became a Richard W. Lyman professor emeritus of humanities at Stanford University in 1994. His renowned academic career at the university, which began in 1960, included progression from an instructor to a full professor, as well as being named an Anthony P. Meier family professor of humanities in 1988 and a Richard W. Lyman professor of humanities in 1993. Additionally, his tenure included administrative roles as the dean of graduate studies and a vice provost.
Most notably, perhaps, was Dr. Carnochan's involvement with the Stanford Humanities Center. Recognized worldwide for its cross-disciplinary research, commitment to scholars, students, and international visitors, and countless annual workshops and other public events, he served as the Center's director for six years between 1985 and 1991. Prior to being recruited by Stanford University, he contributed for two years at his alma mater, Harvard University, as an assistant dean of freshman between 1954 and 1956. Apart from his full-time commitments at Stanford University, Dr. Carnochan worked for many years on the board of advisors of the Ehrenpreis Center for Swift Studies, a research institute located at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany, beginning in 1984. He also was a trustee for The Athenian School in Danville, California, from 1975 to 1988 and Mills College between 1978 and 1985, and twice served as a trustee for the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive from 1983 until 1996 and from 1998 to 2001.
Dr. Carnochan's research has been focused mainly on 18th-century literature and its cultural and historical backgrounds. He has also extensively studied prison literature, Victorian culture and American higher education. Becoming widely published as a result, Dr. Carnochan has authored approximately a dozen books. Some of his more recent publications include "John Murray Carnochan: A Surgeon in his Times," "The Young Gouverneur Morris: Two Essays" and "Scotland the Brave: A Scottish-American Mosaic."
In accounting for his standout success, Dr. Carnochan credits his parents for imbuing him with an appreciation for education. He attended Harvard University, from which he attained a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1953, 1957 and 1960, respectively. In 1995, Dr. Carnochan was the recipient of a Warren R. Howell Award from Stanford University Libraries. He also was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship and an American Philosophical Society travel grant.
