With three decades of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Thomas, now retired, found success as an employment specialist of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs from 2001 to 2020. In this position, he was a subject matter expert of all veterans' claims and Chapter 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits), leveraging his passion for military officials after being a United States Marine Corps veteran. From 1983 to 1999 he worked for the Vocational Program at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (OPI Correctional Industries), which lead to the position of Deputy Warden of Administration of Ohio's first private prison.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Thomas pursued an education at the Eastern Michigan University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in social sciences, and minors in political science and business, in 1975. He later obtained a Master of Criminal Justice degree from Tiffin in 1999. Civically engaged alongside his professional pursuits, Mr. Thomas contributes to the United Negro College Fund.
In recognition of his exceptional achievements throughout his career, Mr. Thomas received numerous special contribution awards and certificates of appreciation from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs. Mr. Thomas served as Veterans Claims Representative, Veteran Claims Examiner, National Employment Corodinator and Management Analyst to the Sectary of Veterans Affairs, nominated twice as Federal Employee of the year, he was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for customer service, customer support and tremendous work from the Detroit Hiring Fair in 2012.
Mr. Thomas attributes his success to the support of his fiancé (Valorie) and family, including his daughter (Stephanie) and grandson (Tyler), close friends and his parents, (Mother, Dorothy Mae Thomas and his Father Herbert Thomas Sr.). Looking toward the future, he intends to volunteer with veterans and informing them of their due benefits, education and employment opportunities.
