Before and since establishing the firm in 1997, Mr. Wheaton has specialized in civil and commercial litigation with an emphasis in family law, while also providing representation in the areas of consumer bankruptcy, criminal defense, probate and estate matters, traffic law and driver's license restoration, and contract negotiation and interpretation. He is a certified Family Law Mediator and Collaborative Law Practitioner.
Before founding his private practice, Mr. Wheaton gained valuable expertise as an attorney with Richard L. Steinberg, P.C. and Haisch & Boyda, P.C., as well as working for 18 months with Consolidated Legal Services, P.C., where he maintained responsibility for handling more than 350 files in various areas of practice.
A proud member of and volunteer in his community, Mr. Wheaton has dedicated his time to the Boy Scouts of America for more than 21 years and to the St. Clair Shores Goodfellows ("no kiddie without a Christmas") for 17 years. Mr. Wheaton also has served for 27 years in various roles on his local school board, the Lakeview Public Schools Board of Education.
In the 1980s, Mr. Wheaton earned a Bachelor of Science in religious studies and sociology from Alma College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School. Upon his graduation, he was admitted to practice law through the State Bar of Michigan, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. Mr. Wheaton retains his professional alignment with the Family Law, LGBTQA, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Solo and General Practice Sections of the State Bar of Michigan. Mr. Wheaton also is the Chair of the LGBTQA Section, he serves on the Family Law Section Council, and he is active with the Macomb County Bar Association.
Mr. Wheaton has further provided his wealth of knowledge to the Ninth Edition of Black's Law Dictionary and has written articles for the Michigan Family Law Journal and the Macomb County Bar Association's Bar Briefs. In recognition of his exemplary work in law and with his community, he was honored with selection as a SuperLawyer in the area of Family Law from 2017 through 2020. He is also rated a 10.0 "Superb" attorney by Avvo.com, and he has been lauded for his work in family and divorce law by Lawyers of Distinction since 2018. In 2019 and 2020, Mr. Wheaton was named to America's Top 100 Criminal Defense attorneys for Michigan.
