A Canadian native and devout Lutheran, Mr. Raaflaub has cultivated a remarkable career by pursuing his passion for education. Throughout secondary school, he admired his instructors and respected their profession. Growing up in the Church, he thoroughly relished in nurturing the academic and religious interests of the younger generation. After a brief career in the field of electronics, his upbringing motivated him to pursue a future in religious studies and mentoring that has lasted more than 60 years.
In 1965, Mr. Raaflaub obtained a Diploma in Theology from Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois, which was upgraded to a Bachelor of Theology in 1972. Through summer studies, he earned an M.A. in Administration at Briercrest Biblical Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan in 1985, receiving also the school's Academic Achievement Award. He earned a Master of Divinity in 1987 at Concordia Theological Seminary, at its new campus at Fort Wayne, Indiana. Additionally, in 1998, Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity.
Mr. Raaflaub began a fulfilling career as an ordained minister of the Lutheran Church in 1965. From 1965 to 1976, he served as pastor of the dual parish of Zion Lutheran Church at Nipawin, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church at Choiceland, Saskatchewan. He did take a one-year absence in 1974-75 to pursue graduate studies in Archaeology and Semitics at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. That was followed by summer archaeological excavation at Tel EI-Hesi in Israel under the auspices of the American Schools of Oriental Research. To that end, he received a research and travel grant from Zion Research Foundation of ASOR, plus a grant from Lutheran Church-Canada. Subsequently, he was called to teach at Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute in Camrose, Alberta, serving as an instructor from 1976 to 1977, and as academic dean and teaching mainly Old Testament studies from 1977 to 2001. He then accepted a call to Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta, where he served as Assistant Professor of Exegetical Studies from 2001 to 2006. During that time, he also served as Director of Admissions, Library Services and Field Education from 2002 to 2004, as Acting Academic Dean during the spring of 2002, and Director of Field Education and Vicarage, from 2005 to 2006 when he retired. He currently retains the title of Professor Emeritus." He also served as guest professor at Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Catharines, Ontario, teaching a course in Biblical Archaeology the summer of 2003.
In 1970, Mr. Raaflaub received an Associated Commercial Travelers/CKEI Radio Television Award in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. A guitarist, he appeared on a number of Prince Albert radio and television programs.
Mr. Raaflaub holds, or has held, memberships in the American Schools of Oriental Research, the National Association of Professors of Hebrew, the Near East Archeological Socie1y, the Association for Psychological Type, and others, and associate memberships with the American Scientific Affiliation, and Creation Research Society. In 1970, he co-edited a book with Walter Lang, The Creation Alternative, in the area of Christianity and science, and has authored a number of articles and reviews for journals and magazines. He is also listed in the acknowledgements section in E. Simon, I. Resnikoff & L. Motzkin, The First Hebrew Primer, Third Edition, EKS Publishing Co., Oakland, CA, 1992.
Mr. Raaflaub's civic involvements include his membership in the Rotary Club of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, serving on its Board of Directors, as President for the 1972-73 year, and as Chairman of the club's Easter Seal Campaign in 1972. He is a member of the World Mission Prayer League and has served on its Canadian Council. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Concordia College in Edmonton, now Concordia University of Edmonton. Mr. Raaflaub's profile has appeared previously in Marquis Who's Who publications: Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Religion, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
