Popovich with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Following the fulfillment of a very successful and fulfilling career, Mr. Popovich retired from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in 1993. For more than 30 years, he enjoyed various administrative positions, including as an assistant general services officer and a general services officer, field support officer and executive officer. Some of Mr. Popovich's responsibilities, which spanned from security and housing, to warehousing, also included overseeing approximately 200 or more employees and their families at any given time. Concluding his career as an assistant inspector general for resource management in the Office of the Inspector General, he left with the rank of a minister counselor in senior foreign service.
Throughout the course of his career with USAID, Mr. Popovich greatly appreciated the opportunity to see the world. His assignments, which mostly took place overseas, included living and working in places like Laos, Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Yemen, Egypt and Panama. He also had three assignments at the agency's Washington D.C. headquarters.
Shortly after retiring from the agency, Mr. Popovich was asked to fulfill some short-term contracts. He spent the next 10 years working in multiple countries, including Cambodia, where he had begun his professional journey many years prior. Realizing that his career had come full circle, Mr. Popovich decided it was time to retire in full and return home.
Mr. Popovich formerly worked for General Steamship Corporation Ltd. in California. Hired out of college, he was responsible for preparing shipment manifests for outgoing cargo on a mimeograph machine. Mr. Popovich was later promoted into a higher role with added responsibility before ultimately being acquired by the USAID.
A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Mr. Popovich enlisted within the U.S. Army in 1952, at the height of the Korean War. Offered various training opportunities, he attended the Army Language School in Monterey, California, where he studied the Russian language for 46 weeks. He subsequently spent the next two years in Japan. Upon his return to the states, Mr. Popovich attained a Bachelor of Science in history at the University of San Francisco.
