Supported by a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Mr. Hewes worked during his college years at WKOW Radio and TV. This radio and television news experience prepared him well for his career in organization management.
At the beginning of this career in 1969, Mr. Hewes flourished as the vice president of communications at the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, holding his position for over a decade. Highlights included organizing major sports activities such as the Super Bowl and the 1975 All-Star baseball game. The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce also worked to restore order in Milwaukee's inner city by assisting the Commandos in their peace-keeping efforts. Mr. Hewes became the president and chief executive officer of Hospitality Minnesota in 1979. He excelled in these prominent positions for a period of 35 years, and retired in 2004. Specializing in organization management, communications and journalism, he notes that his tenure at Hospitality Minnesota experienced a period of tremendous growth and accomplishment under his guidance. He attributes his success to setting attainable goals for himself, his staff and the 3,000 members, always working diligently without becoming discouraged.
To remain aware of developments within the industry, Mr. Hewes maintained his affiliation with several organizations. He was a member of the American Chamber of Commerce's Executives Communications Council, for whom he served as president for one year, as well as the International Society of Restaurant Association Executives and the International Society of Hotel Association Executives. He also served as president of both of these associations. He married his wife Judith in 1984 and she became not only his life partner but invaluable as his top staff executive. Looking toward the future, he plans to continue enjoying his retirement in Florida.
