Dr. Brady celebrates nearly 40 years as a board-certified internist and educator at the University of Hawai'i. For as long as he can recall, he had wanted to become a physician, describing his interest in medicine as a process of "osmosis, not an event." By his sophomore year of high school, he had been invited to participate in medical research with an affiliate program of the University of Hawai'i. Dr. Brady subsequently pursued his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1977.
Dr. Brady returned to the University of Hawai'i to obtain a Master of Public Health in 1978 before completing additional postgraduate coursework through 1979. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, and dedicated the next three years of his career to training through his internship and residency at the University of Hawai'i. Through the late 1980s, Dr. Brady practiced as a physician with Kaiser Permanente Honolulu and the medical director of the Kokua Kalihi Valley.
Dr. Brady's tenure with the University of Hawai'i began in 1986 upon accepting a position as a clinical instructor. From 1989 until 1995, He served as a physician with the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and the assistant medical director of American Hawai'i Cruises. In 1999, Dr. Brady became a clinical assistant professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai'i, advancing to the posts of the vice chairman of the department of Native Hawai'ian health in 2003 and the interim chairman from 2009 until 2011.
As the chairman of the department of Native Hawai'ian health, Dr. Brady has managed treatment programs benefiting Hansen's Disease patients in Kalaupapa, work he considers to be a career highlight. Since 1984, he has excelled as an attending physician at Hawaii Pacific Health Straub Medical Center. Likewise, Dr. Brady continues to teach at the University of Hawai'i, with which he has been an associate professor since 2003.
Dr. Brady is additionally active as the founding chairman of the Hawai'i Consortium for Continuing Medical Education at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai'i, and a former member of the ACCME board of directors. The editor of the Hawai'i Journal of Medicine and Public Health, he has become recognizable as the host of several health and wellness television programs, including "Health in Paradise," "UH On Call" and "KHON Morning News: Ask the Doctor," a long-running and popular weekly news segment. Dr. Brady continues to advocate for healthcare access and quality for Indigenous Hawai'ians, and works with the American Heart Association and programs encouraging cancer screening and awareness of the importance of early diagnosis.
In addition to his clinical and medical advocacy work, Dr. Brady has contributed to his community as a longtime trustee of the Saint Louis School, a veteran of the United States Merchant Marines and a former troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America. He is the former governor of the Hawai'i chapter of the American College of Physicians and the past president of 'Ahahui 'o nā Kauka, Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians. Likewise, Dr. Brady remains affiliated with the American Public Health Association, the American College of Physicians and the Rotary Club of Honolulu, among others.
Throughout his career, Dr. Brady has been the recipient of numerous accolades for his professional and humanitarian work. He has been recognized among the Best Doctors in America since 2001, and presented with Physician of the Year Awards from the Honolulu County Medical Society and the Hawaii Medical Association. A Paul Harris fellow, he has additionally accepted grants from the Pacific Health Research Institute, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Kuakini Medical Research Institute. A four-time Po'okela Award winner, Dr. Brady was honored with a 2015 O'o Award from the Native Hawai'ian Chamber of Commerce and selected as Grand Marshall of the 2008 Prince Kuhio Parade.
