Mr. Harris first garnered inspiration for his career in civil engineering from his grandfather's and later his father's business, EL Harris and Son Inc., which was established in 1907. During his formative years, his family taught him invaluable lessons and methods that assisted him in cultivating a successful career, which has spanned decades. Presently, Mr. Harris excels as the vice president of Kanawha Realty & Development.
Regarding his qualifications, Mr. Harris is registered as a professional engineer and contractor. Likewise, he retains his proficiencies in brick laying, home equity and property management in nine different states throughout the United States. Along with serving as a pivotal member of his family's business, he has executed the responsibilities of his present position since 1964. Over the years, Mr. Harris managed an upwards of $30 million in construction assignments, while ensuring optimal operation by eliminating labor stoppages with an industry-wide contract in 1972.
Mr. Harris maintains his affiliation as a board member of the Mason Contractors Association of America, a past president of the Kanawha Valley Builders Association, a former member of the West Virginia Contractors Association and is a fleet admiral emeritus in the Great Kanawha River Navy. He has been a volunteer for 18 years with the United Way, oversaw a national youth program for the Elks covering six states for 22 years, and served as an elected chair officer of the national Elks organization. He has also served on various committees with his membership in several chapters of the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), and is a retired Registered Professional Engineer in West Virginia.
He is a 50-plus year member of ASCE, NSPE, and Bricklayers and Allied Crafts (BA) union, and is active in several activities of his alma mater, Virginia Tech.
Mr. Harris has traveled extensively, by motor home, throughout North America, visiting all states, across Canada, and throughout central and western Mexico.
