Dr. Inoguchi is an internationally recognized authority on East Asian comparative culture and politics, currently serving as the president of the University of Niigata Prefecture. A four-time grantee of the Japanese Ministry of Education and a Fulbright visiting scholar to such world-class institutions as the University of Delhi, the University of Aarhus and the Harvard University Center for International Affairs, Dr. Inoguchi is one of the leading scholars of Asian foreign policy and contributing social factors. He holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of Tokyo, and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MT) in 1974.
After completing his doctoral study at MIT, Dr. Inoguchi returned to Japan, where he became an associate professor at Sophia University in Tokyo, departing in 1977 to join the University of Tokyo as an associate professor of political science. He rose to a full professorship in 1988, and would continue to teach at the University of Tokyo until 2005, whereupon he was granted professor emeritus status. Likewise, Dr. Inoguchi was a professor at Chuo University from 2005 until 2009, when he accepted his current role as the chancellor and president of the University of Niigata Prefecture. In 2017, he was named as an eminent scholar-professor at the Institute of Asian Cultures at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo, where he continues to research and teach.
Dr. Inoguchi has been a visiting professor to the Graduate Institute of International Studies, the Australian National University and the National University of Singapore, as well as a senior vice rector of the United Nations University. Throughout his career, he has provided his expertise to public and private sector panels, including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization International Committee of Peace Research, the Japanese Science Council and the Japanese Government Legislative Council. He continues to serve as the president of the Asian Consortium for Political Research, the director of the AsiaBarometer Survey and a counselor for the International Trade and Investment Foundation and the Asia Society. Likewise, Dr. Inoguchi is the editor in chief of the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics and the author of such books as "The SAGE Handbook of Asian Foreign Policy," "The Development of Global Legislative Politics: Rousseau and Locke Writ Global" and "Trust with Asian Characteristics: Interpersonal and Institutional."
In recognition of his groundbreaking work in East Asian regional political science, Dr. Inoguchi has been presented with accolades like the International Communications Fund Award for Research Excellence, a Suntory Academic Award, a Japanese Public Policy Association Award, and several book awards, among many others. He is also the namesake of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies Takashi Inoguchi Endowed Track on Quality of Life and Well-Being in East Asia, and an honorary member of the Japan Society for Behavior Metrics. In the coming years, Dr. Inoguchi looks forward to repeating his previous collaborative regional quality of life surveys of Europe and Asia, and to continue publishing, with upcoming works focusing on multilateral treaties and a unified theory of global legislative politics.
