After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Luther College and a Master's degree in Community and Regional Planning from Iowa State University, Amber Lynch began her career as a city planner in the Neighborhood Development Division for the City of Des Moines, Iowa. After serving in that position for 10 years, she was appointed to her current position as Executive Director of Invest DSM, building a new non-profit organization dedicated to orchestrating neighborhood revitalization in Des Moines and Polk County, Iowa. In her career, Ms. Lynch has enjoyed how planning allows her to play a role in shaping the future of a place. She has always been interested in how society leaves its mark on the built environment. At Invest DSM, Ms. Lynch oversees a small team of staff that provide holistic and innovative solutions that strengthen neighborhoods, primarily through strategic investments in real estate and partnerships with other organizations to improve quality of life. Invest DSM is currently serving four neighborhood areas in Des Moines, called Special Investment Districts.
In her position, Ms. Lynch has gained expertise in urban planning, neighborhood development and community engagement. She is most proud of having the opportunity to create and test new strategies that strengthen neighborhoods, and helping to ensure that resources are in place to support the work. Recently, she was part of a team that advocated for the City and County governments to make a renewed commitment to neighborhood revitalization, resulting in a $5 million annual budget and the creation of Invest DSM. For her efforts in her field, Ms. Lynch's projects have received the Better Together Award from the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation and Partner in Service award from AARP Iowa. She was also recognized among the Des Moines Register's People to Watch in 2020. She has attributed her professional success to her passion and drive for excellence. She has always been good at connecting with others and understanding various perspectives. Civically, Ms. Lynch has been involved as a Board member for the American Planning Association Iowa Chapter from 2011-2019 and currently serves on the steering committee for the national Middle Neighborhoods initiative. She maintains professional affiliation with the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association. Looking toward the future, Ms. Lynch plans to continue learning how best to inspire people to love where they live.
