Bolstered by a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Washington, Mr. Carlson pursued a career in law, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Washington and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1967 and 1968, respectively. Leveraging 40 years of legal expertise, he has excelled as a merger and acquisition lawyer. He now serves as senior of counsel with K&L Gates concentrating on corporate governance and complex strategic relationships, and serving as special counsel to corporate and nonprofit boards alike.
Before obtaining his current role, Mr. Carlson parlayed his expertise to students at the George Washington University Law School as an assistant professor of law. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has presented at a variety of continuing legal education programs through the Washington State Bar Association, the University of Washington Law School, and other CLE groups. Outside of his work with K&L Gates, he remains dedicated to the legal community on a local, state and national scale, serving as a member of the Corporate Laws Committee at the American Bar Association's Business Law Section. In previous years, he chaired the Business Law Section of the Washington State Bar Association and is a founder, past chair and long-term member of the Washington State Bar Association's Corporate Act Revision Committee.
In addition to his dedication to the legal community, Mr. Carlson remains active in his local community, sitting as chairman of the board of directors for the Washington Research Foundation, member of the University of Washington's Foundation Board, and past president and current trustee with Pilchuck Glass School. Over the years, he also served as chair of the board of trustees at the Cornish College of Arts, president of the University of Washington Law School Foundation and vice chair of the Washington State Arts Commission.
For his outstanding body of work, Mr. Carlson was honored as a Washington Super Lawyer between 2003 and 2020, and was named Best Lawyers' Lawyer of the Year for Seattle Merger and Acquisition and Outstanding Graduate of the Year through the University of Washington Law School in 2011. Throughout his career, he has also been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 30-plus years and Martindale-Hubbell's AV-Preeminent Rating Judicial Edition. Likewise, he was named a Super Lawyer Top 100 in Washington Law & Politics and the Top 100 Lawyers in Washington through Seattle Met Magazine. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Association. Looking forward, Mr. Carlson intends to continue his governance and non-profit board work and legal scholarship.
