CARDIFF BY THE SEA, CA, November 09, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Julianna Thomas with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Thomas celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Thomas is an oceanographer whose incredible career spanned more than 40 years. Renowned for her work, she is an expert in high-quality wave measurements and in the promotion of observations for climate change. Joining the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Integrative Oceanography Division at the University of California San Diego in 1976, she has since enjoyed several other significant roles, most recently serving as the Co-Principal Investigator and Program Manager of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Coastal Data Information Program at the Institution from 2004 to 2019. Under the direction of the founder and head Principal Investigator, Dr. Richard Seymour, the two successfully promoted the ideas of real-time high quality data and user support. Ms. Thomas subsequently served as Executive Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System from 2007 to 2018. Additionally, she had the opportunity to serve as the Project Manager of the Ocean Observing Initiative for cyber-infrastructure operations, which enables scientists to examine ocean processes on global, regional and coastal levels, between 2012 and 2014.
Although challenging at times, Ms. Thomas has particularly enjoyed the time she has spent working offshore. She has also drawn great satisfaction from the many changes she has experienced with respect to technology. Prior to the development of computers, Ms. Thomas would document real-time data through a shore station, which consisted of hand-soldered circuit board and acoustic modems. The use of internet and satellite communications have also transformed how she processes data.
Ms. Thomas has contributed on the decadal survey panel for the National Academy of Sciences from 2016 to 2019. She is also active on the steering committees of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Quality Control of Real Time Data, and the Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Meteorology. Likewise, Ms. Thomas was a member of the data management steering team for the Interagency Ocean Observation Commission.
Leveraging her expertise, Ms. Thomas has disseminated her research findings in various scholarly articles. She also co-authored a chapter in the 2005 book, "Coastal Ocean Observing Systems." The chapter expounds upon high resolution wave observations and how HF radar-derived surface currents are critical to decision making for maritime operations.
Ms. Thomas' volunteer efforts have included teaching school-aged children about the many facets of oceanography. She is also presently serving as a Senior Advisor for the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS). The goal of the SCCOOS is to provide scientific data and information about the changing conditions of Southern California's coast to protect the environment, improve the economy and promote safety.
Notably, Ms. Thomas holds a Master of Arts in French literature from San Diego State University since 1971. She later completed postgraduate coursework in mathematics, science and programming between 1976 and 1995. Since embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Thomas has maintained her membership with the Quality Assurance of Real Time Oceanographic Data, the American Geophysical Union and the American Association of Underwater Sciences.
