Notably transitioning from merchandizing to photography, Ms. Casella, the owner and founder of Margaret Casella Photography in New York City, specializes in still life. Capturing various objects for clients in advertising, as well as for corporate publications, she has photographed everything from fruits, vegetables and kitchen supplies to botanicals, seagulls on the beach and the busy streets of Manhattan. Renowned for her work, Ms. Casella brings a level of sophistication to her work that exceeds expectations. She is also known for being one of just a few artists to take film and the substrate and float it in water to make the image move, which can be seen in many of her lighthouse photographs.
While enrolled in photography school, Ms. Casella was assigned to perform a photo shoot of the homeless. However, she detested the idea of exposing indigent people for being underprivileged, so she decided to focus her work on still life. Ms. Casella's portfolio has since been included in various permanent collections both locally and abroad in such places as the Center of Photography in Woodstock, New York, the Fine Art Museum of Long Island in Hempstead, New York, and the Museum for Photography in Branschweig, Germany.
Among her other exhibitions, Ms. Casella's photographs have been included at the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, New York, the Midtown Y Photography Gallery in New York, and the Hillwood Art Museum in Greenvale, New York. She also had the opportunity to be featured at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Titled "Arts for Transit," it was on display in the main concourse. The culmination of her work, a book titled "Garbage of Art," was published in 1991. Ms. Casella's next goal is to be featured in the Museum of Modern Arts in Manhattan.
Ms. Casella formerly held positions with Brides Magazine. She also worked in retail as an assistant buyer for Gimbels, Macy's and Saks 5th Avenue. Lending her expertise to the community-at-large, she established and served as the director the Arts Upstairs Gallery in East Williston, New York, between 1983 and 1991. Ms. Casella is a former charter member and former advisory committee member of the C.W. Post Campus School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Ms. Casella attended the Tobe-Coburn School for Fashion Careers, where she became certified in merchandising in 1961. A premier school for fashion, it closed in 2017. Ms. Casella also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York City and received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts at Long Island University.
Ms. Casella is a professional member of the New York City Woman's Photography Group. Recognized with a Gold Award from Photo Design Magazine in 1990, she was also named to the Town of North Hempstead's Women's Roll of Honor in North Hempstead, New York, in 2003. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Casella has been showcased in over 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
