Dr. Duma is a neurosurgeon with more than three decades of innovation in surgical techniques for the treatment of complex brain tumors to his credit. Inspired by a childhood family doctor, he was driven to pursue a career in medicine since coming of age. Dr. Duma holds a Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience from Colgate University, and earned a Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1986, choosing to specialize in neurosurgery for its hands-on nature and the instant gratification of surgical results.
Dr. Duma completed an internship and neurosurgical residency at the Georgetown University Hospital, where he was named as the chief resident in his final year. He completed a one-year fellowship in stereotactic neurosurgery and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1993, he was appointed as the co-director of gamma knife radiosurgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, overseeing what was then one of just twelve gamma knife centers in the county. He would remain active with Good Samaritan Hospital until 1998, when he was appointed as the chairperson of the department of neurosurgery at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Dr. Duma joined the University of California – Irvine School of Medicine the following year as the head of the division of radiosurgery and an assistant clinical professor of neurosurgery. He would continue to teach until 2013.
Dr. Duma has maintained a private practice in Newport Beach, California, since 1993, where he specializes in restorative brain surgeries and the treatment of brain tumors, Parkinson's and other movement disorders. In addition to his clinical practice, he has maintained involvement as the medical director of the brain tumor program at Hoag Memorial Hospital, where he has served since the 1990s. Dr. Duma is the creator and patent holder of a widely adopted novel treatment for glioblastoma, a complex and aggressive cancer. The procedure was reported in the Journal of Neurosurgery in 2016, which he considers the culmination and highlight of his career. He has also pioneered the use of stem cells injected directly into the brain for Alzheimer's Disease, ALS, Parkinson's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. He is an active member of the International Stereotactic Radiation Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In his leisure time, Dr. Duma enjoys travel, boating and playing in his rock band.
