After experiencing discrimination from a high school teacher, Dr. Castillo was determined to utilize all of his resources to become successful in his career. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in social ecology and mental health from the University of California, a Master of Arts in psychology from Goddard College and a Doctor of Philosophy in education from Claremont University. Dr. Castillo began his career as an associate clinical professor in psychosocial medicine at the University of California Irvine.
In 1990, Dr. Castillo founded the Consortium of Professionals and Physicians from Latin America (COPHYLA), with which he has served voluntarily as the chief executive officer for more than 30 years. He worked as an instructor and faculty member in various teaching settings including public education, graduate school and health and mental health. Moreover, Dr. Castillo was responsible for the design, development and implementation of capacity building programs for international physicians, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professionals to serve in underserved and underrepresented safety net communities in California and throughout the United States.
Over the years, Dr. Castillo has garnered expertise in integrating primary care and mental health care, including war trauma. Among the highlights of his career, he was incredibly proud of his time as a faculty member in the department of medicine at the University of California Irvine. He was also instrumental in the development of the Welcome Back Program at Grossmont College in San Diego, California, which presented newly immigrated medical doctors with academic upward mobility and opportunities to work in entry level and advance positions while navigating the American educational and workforce system. Through this program, many doctors were able to avoid going through a second round of training in the United States after having already trained for years in other countries.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Castillo has penned numerous research publications on psychosocial medicine in primary care practice. He also authored a book, "Successful Immigrants in the Health Care Profession: Brain Drain or Brain Gain." Likewise, Dr. Castillo has maintained his professional affiliation with the American Psychological Association, the Internal Medicine Association, the American Board of Surgical Assistants, the American Board of Naturopathic Medicine and the California Royal Health Association.
For his exemplary efforts throughout his career, Dr. Castillo has received numerous awards from the California state legislature and several senators. He also accepted a Distinguished Award from the American College of International Physicians for his work with the internationally trained professionals. For his work with COPHYLA, he was celebrated with a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Senate. Looking toward the future, Dr. Castillo hopes to continue consulting in order to help other professionals while dedicating more time to his family and grandchildren.
