ANN ARBOR, MI, November 16, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to honor Tetsufumi Ueda, PhD, with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Dr. Ueda celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Ueda is a pioneering neuroscientist and educator best known for his groundbreaking work identifying glutamate as the primary central nervous system neurotransmitter. While coming of age, he fostered a precocious passion and talent for many areas of science: after mastering vacuum-tube radios and simple electronics, he moved on to excel in physics and chemistry, and attended Kyoto University, earning a Bachelor of Science in biological chemistry in 1966. The more he learned, the more Dr. Ueda wanted to explore the connections between medicine, chemistry and the burgeoning field of neurobiology. He traveled to the United States in 1966 to begin a teaching fellowship and doctoral study at the University of Michigan, and completed a Doctor of Philosophy in biological chemistry in 1971.
For much of the 1970s, Dr. Ueda found success as a research associate of the department of pharmacology at Yale University in conjunction with the National Institute of Mental Health. He began his career with the University of Michigan in 1978 as an assistant professor of pharmacology and psychiatry, as well as an assistant research scientist in the school's Mental Health Research Institute, where he became an associate in 1981. By 1989, he advanced to the role of a full professor in the University of Michigan department of pharmacology, a senior research scientist at the Mental Health Research Institute and a research professor for the Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University of Michigan. During his time with the University of Michigan, Dr. Ueda held numerous faculty and research leadership roles, including terms on the faculty search and incoming student committees for the departments of psychiatry, pharmacology and neuroscience. He transitioned out of teaching and into a research professor position in 2003, and was granted professor emeritus status in 2016.
Extensively published, Dr. Ueda has contributed numerous chapters to books and articles to professional publications, and he sits on the editorial board of Neurochemical Research, a scientific journal. He remains a sought-after presenter and speaker, having addressed academic conferences and symposia across the globe, and has served as a grant reviewer for such organizations as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the NATO Advanced Study Institute. Dr. Ueda holds a patent for protocols used in neurotransmitter uptake inhibition discovered in the course of his research on the structure and neurochemical functions of glutamate.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of neurochemistry, Dr. Ueda has been presented with dozens of grants, awards and accolades, including a National Institutes of Health Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award and a University of Michigan Senior Research Scientist Lectureship Award. He maintains his affiliations with such professional organizations as the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the International Society for Neurochemistry. Looking toward the future, Dr. Ueda aspires to continue writing and publishing independent research for years to come.
