For more than five decades, Dr. Mackiewicz has taught in the biological sciences department of the State University of New York at Albany, becoming the school's first distinguished professor in 1973. Fascinated with the natural world since coming of age, he developed an interest in science and the pursuit of in-depth study of parasites that have captivated him throughout his life. A graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Mackiewicz holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, and was awarded with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology in 1961.
Dr. Mackiewicz began teaching at the medical entomology and parasitology departments at Cornell University as a graduate student, and spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow of the National Institutes of Health and the Switzerland Institute of Zoology before beginning his career with the State University of New York at Albany in 1961. His research focuses on the evolution and ecology of parasites, with an emphasis on tapeworm biology, and he has contributed to more than 90 published articles and scientific papers. In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Mackiewicz is proud to have synthesized ten years of work on tapeworm evolution, and considers it an honor to have contributed to the body of knowledge in his specialty.
In 2017, Dr. Mackiewicz was bestowed with the distinguished title of a professor emeritus. He is a lifetime member of the Helminthological Society of Washington, and remains affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Parasitologists. In his retirement, Dr. Mackiewicz looks forward to spending more time fly fishing, a lifelong hobby, and hopes to begin working on an autobiography.
