Mr. Canady has been a senior counsel at Arnold & Porter LLP in San Francisco since 2012. Bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise, he is a former managing partner at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin in San Francisco, which merged with Arnold & Porter in 2012. He was also an associate at White, Froelich & Peterson in San Diego. Throughout his career, Mr. Canady has served in the capacity of general counsel for multiple publicly held corporations and is experienced in buying and selling privately and publicly held businesses and working on securities offerings and corporate governance matters. He especially enjoys being involved in the mergers and acquisitions practice area.
Over the years, Mr. Canady's clients have included companies from various industries and fields, including financial, pharmaceutical, banking, real estate and engineering. His transactions include representing a Japanese company in the acquisition and subsequent disposition of the Pebble Beach Company. As an avid golfer, it was a particularly pleasant experience. Other transactions included representing The Charles Schwab Corporation in its acquisition and subsequent disposition of U.S. Trust Corporation, and in its acquisitions of Soundview Technologies Group, CyberCorp, the 401(k) companies and the private asset management division of State Street Bank. Mr. Canady represented The Good Guys, Inc., a publicly held consumer electronics company, in its sale to CompUSA and China MobileSoft, Ltd. in its acquisition by PalmSource, Inc. He also represented PalmSource, Inc. in its sale to a Japanese company.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Canady served in the rank of lieutenant senior grade in the Office of the Navy Judge Advocate General. Many years later, his civic duties have included serving as the president and trustee of the Iowa Law School Foundation, an organization responsible for the quality of legal education that the University of Iowa College of Law provides to its students. Aligned with numerous industry-related organizations, Mr. Canady remains a member of the American Bar Association, San Francisco Bar Association, Iowa Bar Association and State Bar of California. He is a member of the Pacific Union Club, Olympic Club, San Francisco Golf Club, Mission Hills Country Club and New York Road Runners Club.
Mr. Canady acquired a Bachelor of Science in 1956 and a Juris Doctor in 1959 at Iowa University, followed by a Master of Laws in taxation at Georgetown University in 1962. While pursuing his law degree, he was elected to the Order of the Coif and was a member of the Board of Editors of the Iowa Law Review. Mr. Canady was admitted to practice by the California Bar Association and began his career clerking for the Honorable Oliver Hamlin in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit between 1962 and 1963. Mr. Canady learned a great deal during his one-year of service regarding the judicial process, which he later found to be very helpful in his practice.
Mr. Canady has been named to Best Lawyers in America every year since 1993, as well as to numerous editions of Who's Who Legal and Northern California Super Lawyers. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, he was named to the United States Lawyers Ranking List of the Nation's Top 10 Mergers & Acquisitions Lawyers. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been showcased in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
