A veteran scholar with more than 50 years of expertise in psycholinguistics, Dr. McNeill is an emeritus professor of psychology and linguistics at the University of Chicago, where he specializes in the relationship of language to thought, and the gestures that accompany discourse. Throughout his time at the aforementioned university, he has conducted experiments on gesture performance: unity of gesture and language, the pickup of gesture information by listeners, change in gestures when they are required to carry the full communicative burden, and gesture-speech crossover. Over the years, Dr. McNeill has honed his vast breadth of knowledge through varying positions with the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Duke University, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the Netherlands Institute in Advanced study in Wassenaar, the Netherlands.
In a career filled with professional achievements, Dr. McNeill is most proud of authoring the book "Hand and Mind" which became known around the world and has afforded him with the opportunity to present lectures in England, Italy, and France, among other countries. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. McNeill has contributed more than 150 publications and has written 10 books including "Hand and Mind", "Gesture and Thought", "How Language Began", "Why We Gesture", and "Narrative Development of Young Children" (co-authored with Elena T. Levy).
Dr. McNeill earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of California Berkeley in 1953. He obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology through his alma mater in 1962 prior to pursuing further studies at the Center for Cognitive Studies at Harvard University. He has been honored many times, having received a Guggenheim fellowship, the Gordon J. Laing Prize for "Hand and Mind" and an Award for Outstanding Faculty Achievement from the University of Chicago. In 2007, he was made Honorary President for life by the International Society for Gesture Studies in recognition as one of the founders of the field of gesture studies.
