A brilliant musician, Dr. Osterman is a composer, organist and pianist who began her career in education in 1972 as a keyboard teacher and choir director at the Mount Vernon Academy in Mount Vernon, Ohio. She then spent two years in Louisiana teaching music at the Berean SDA Church School. Transitioning into academia, Dr. Osterman was acquired by Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in Huntsville, Alabama, as a professor of music. Teaching on campus for 38 years before retiring in 2016, she spent three decades on campus during which she assumed the role of full professor of music. She served as the university's primary theory teacher and chairman of the music department, directing a 100-person college choir for 14 years and directing the Aeolians, the college's select choir, for two years. Dr. Osterman was also involved with several faculty and administrative committees during her tenure.
After teaching at Oakwood College, Dr. Osterman subsequently spent three years chairing the department of music at Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica between 2009 and 2012. Some of her responsibilities included assisting the school in gaining accreditation for its music program, developing a strategic program, and formulating a department handbook. Dr. Osterman also had the opportunity to study during 2006 on a Fulbright scholarship in Turkey, where she attended three different universities and learned a great deal about their culture with respect to music.
Apart from her full-time commitments in academia, Dr. Osterman has lectured both locally and abroad. She has also lent her expertise as a graduate tutor in music theory and as a consultant. With respect to her music, she has performed around the world, both as a musician and alongside her students. She has conducted numerous music festivals and clinics and has adjudicated several local concerts. Furthermore, Dr. Osterman has published much of her own music through several publishers, including Alliance Publishers, and in 1998 established her own company, AWSAHM MUSIC, a small, Christian music ministry through which she continues to release her works.
A published author, Dr. Osterman released two books, "What God Says About Music" and "Worship: From Praise Him to Praise Hymn." She has also contributed many articles to Adventist magazines throughout her career.
Active in her church, Dr. Osterman was a church organist for many years. She has also served her community as a Huntsville Community Watch coordinator.
To support her career, Dr. Osterman has been aligned with several industry-related organizations. She is a member and former dean of the Huntsville chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She is also a member of the American Society of Composers and the Adventists Musician Network.
A native of Atlanta, Dr. Osterman later graduated from high school in Indianapolis. She then prepared for her career by receiving a Bachelor and Master of Arts in music at Andrews University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. She later achieved a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Alabama in 1988.
Dr. Osterman has been celebrated with multiple awards and recognitions for her teachings and musical talents. Named Teacher of the Year by Oakwood College, she also received the Zapara Excellence in Teaching Award. Other recognitions include an Outstanding Young Women of America Award, a Commendation Award for Meritorious Service from Oakwood College, as well as several composition awards. She was also named to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and was honored by being the topic of the doctoral dissertation of University of Kentucky student Angelique Clay in 2006. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Osterman has been showcased in the 56th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America, the eighth edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 23rd, 25th and 27th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
