Mr. Laenui is a renowned human rights advocate and private practice attorney celebrating more than 40 years of excellence in the Hawaiian and international culture and communities. A graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, he initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science before graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1976. A leader in the fight for Hawaiian sovereignty, Mr. Laenui has written and lectured on decolonization, self-determination, community-based behavioral health initiatives and environmental practices with a Native Hawaiian spiritual and social perspective.
After in-depth personal study of fundamental Hawaiian beliefs and culture under philosopher, historian Pilahi Paki, Mr. Laenui committed himself to policy advocacy, serving as the vice president of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples and an expert consultant to the United Nations' panels on racial, social, and economic equity in Indigenous communities. For more than 15 years, he has excelled as the executive director of the Waianae Coast Community Mental Health Center and Waianae Coast Community Alternative Development Corporation. Since 1993, he has been active as the president of the Hawaiian National Broadcast Corporation. Likewise, Mr. Laenui is noted as the chairman of the Native Hawaiian Convention, the director of the Institute for the Advancement of Hawaiian Affairs and the president of the Pacific & Asia Council of Indigenous Peoples.
Mr. Laenui is the former host of the long-running radio shows "Hawaiian Potpourri" and "A Second Glance," and continues to host and produce a television version of "A Second Glance" for Olelo Public Access Television. Looking toward the future, he hopes to transition his focus to mastering broadcasting technology and new media strategies to reach both a local and an international audience. He is the recipient of a 2012 Native Hawaiian Health Award and was celebrated as the Mental Health Association of America in Hawaii's Executive of the Year in 2006. A member of the Hawaii Bar Association, the Union of Third World Journalists and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, Mr. Laenui has maintained his involvement as a practitioner and teacher of Tai Chi Chuan.
