From a young age, Mr. Montgomery has harbored an interest in knife-making. He began his career as the head shift and cashier manager at Sharpstown Ice Center before accepting a position as a store manager for the Starbucks Coffee Company. In 2010, Mr. Montgomery decided to pursue his passion professionally and formally enrolled in courses in knife-making.
After studying at the University of Houston and the University of Phoenix, Mr. Montgomery learned the traditional Japanese bladesmithing Appalachian Mountain way of knife-making and completed workshops with the American Bladesmith Society. During his training, he worked under some of the best bladesmiths and knife-makers in the United States. Mr. Montgomery currently excels as the owner of Serenity Knives, for which he additionally works as a knife-maker and a bladesmith.
In his present business, Mr. Montgomery specializes in functional knives such as kitchen cutlery, hunting and fishing knives and utility knives. All of the company's knives are handmade with full custom design options. Serenity Knives also offers knife sharpening services and full reconditioning, as well as refurbishing and restoring old knives.
Only two years after making his first knife, Mr. Montgomery was commissioned to make custom steak knives for a popular restaurant in Houston. Eventually, he obtained commissions from other restaurants such as Dallas' Mansion on Turtle Creek and Las Vegas' Bazaar Meat. Over the years, Mr. Montgomery has crafted more than 1,600 blades, including oyster knives, chef's knives, straight razors and machetes.
As a testament to his skill in the industry, Mr. Montgomery's shop was showcased on a local television channel. He has attributed his professional success to his passion for his work as well as a keen attention to detail needed to survive in a niche market. Looking toward the future, Mr. Montgomery plans to further develop his production so that he can produce a signature line of knives for Serenity Knives.
