Dr. Weems is the Willard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History at Wichita State University, having garnered a laudable reputation for his groundbreaking studies on entrepreneurship and business development in African American communities throughout the 20th century. Eminently qualified in his field, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Western Illinois University in 1973; a Master of Arts in African American Studies from Boston University in 1975; a Master of Arts in History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1982; and a Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1987.
Before joining Wichita State University in his current role, Dr. Weems worked in numerous positions at the University of Missouri from 1990 to 2011. He moved up the ranks from assistant to full professor and also served as interim associate vice chancellor for equity. Earlier in his career, he assumed the post of visiting assistant professor of history and African American studies at the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1990. Before teaching at the university level, Weems acquired teaching experience while employed in the Milwaukee Public School system from 1977-1983 and as an history instructor at Middlesex Community College (Boston, MA) from 1974 to 1975.
In addition to his successful teaching career, Dr. Weems is also an accomplished author. He has written five books related to African American business history: Black Business in the Black Metropolis: The Chicago Metropolitan Assurance Company, 1925-1985; Desegregating the Dollar: African American Consumerism in the 20th Century; Business in Black and White: American Presidents and Black Entrepreneurs in the Twentieth Century; Building the Black Metropolis: African American Entrepreneurship in Chicago; and The Merchant Prince of Black Chicago: Anthony Overton and the Building of a Financial Empire. Professor Weems also served as a historical advisor and appeared in the documentary Boss: The African American Experience in Business which premiered on PBS in 2019.
His community engagement activities include serving on the Board of Directors of the Kansas African American Museum and the Heartland Wichita Black Chamber of Commerce. Through the latter, he helped establish the "Wichita Black Business Hall of Fame."
Dr. Weems' professional achievements have been acknowledged numerous times including recognition as a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional and the Marquis Who's Who Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Looking toward the future, he aspires to continue advancing the study of black entrepreneurship in America.
