Accumulating more than four decades of experience in academia, Dr. Hutchinson became a professor emeritus of theater at Rhode Island College in 2004. Teaching various undergraduate courses throughout his career, he also served as the chairperson of the department of music, theatre and dance, and was the coordinator of theatre graduate degree programs. Dr. Hutchinson also held teaching appointments at Tougaloo College in Mississippi for three years prior and was the director of dance and drama at the Mathewson Street United Methodist Church in Providence from 1969 to 1975.
Dr. Hutchinson's distinguished career history has included directing over 100 plays and readings between 1957 and 2006. A dedicated civic advocate on behalf of his community, he has been instrumental in the proliferation of the arts, beginning in 1970 as the Rhode Island Arts Education Project theater coordinator. He later held leadership roles with the American College Theater Festival, the Providence Inner City Arts Association and the Rhode Island Playwrights Theater, and was an artistic director, board director and advisory committee member for the NewGate Theater. Additionally, Dr. Hutchinson lent his expertise to the Rhode Island Department of Human Services in various capacities for nearly 20 years between 1985 and 2004.
Interested in theater since the age of six, Dr. Hutchinson joined the drama club in junior high school, began acting, and received his first award for exemplary performance. After high school, he pursued an education at Franklin Marshall College, attaining a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1957. He subsequently attended Princeton Theological Seminary, where he acquired a Bachelor of Divinity in 1960. Dr. Hutchinson also completed a Master of Arts in speech and theater at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in theater at Northwestern University in 1968.
Dr. Hutchinson was elected as a fellow of the New England Theatre Conference in 1987. A nonprofit organization, the Conference provides various resources to theater artists and educators throughout the region. He is a former Danforth Fellow as well. Established by the Danforth Foundation, it was one of the largest nonprofit foundations that funded religious and higher education projects throughout the United States.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Hutchinson was acknowledged with a Recognition Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1983 and a Directing Award from the New England region of the Kennedy Center, American College of Theater Festival, in 1984. In 2003, he received the Claiborne Pell Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts from Trinity Repertory Company. The same years he also received several alumni accolades and a Distinguished Service Award from the faculty of arts and sciences at Rhode Island College. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Hutchinson has been showcased in approximately 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
