Mr. Timmer initially planned to pursue a college education and return home to work in the family tomato canning business. However,he received an opportunity to attend Harvard College where he decided to study economics professionally. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Harvard, he received a Fulbright scholarship to study food science in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon returning home he helped build a new processing plant for the family business and then moved to New York City to analyze commodity markets for a major conglomerate. He eventually returned to Harvard University, where he attained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics. Dr. Timmer commenced his academic career as an assistant professor of economics at the Stanford University Food Research Institute, where he received tenure.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Timmer held numerous academic positions as an economics and agricultural educator, serving as a chaired professor at Cornell University and the University of California San Diego, where he was also the Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. He also served as an economic advisor for the Indonesian National Planning Agency and the Harvard Advisory Group in Jakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Timmer spent most his career as a professor at Harvard University, where he was a Professor in the Department of Nutrition in the School of Public Health, then the John D. Black Professor of Food Economics in the Harvard Business School, and finallythe Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Development Studies, At Large, after which he became a professor emeritus.
He also worked as the chief economist for Development Alternatives Inc., was a Senior Fellow of the Center for Global Development (where he continues as a Non-Resident Fellow) and as the World Institute for Development Economic Research (WIDER) 18th annual lecturer at the UN in New York. He has authored and co-authored numerous books and articles, mainly pertaining to food and agricultural policy and economicdevelopment.Dr. Timmer received the Bintang Jasa Utama (Highest Merit Star) Medal from the government of Indonesia for his work on reducing poverty in the country (the country's highest award to a non-citizen) and the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought from Tufts University. He was also named as the San Diego Citizen-Diplomat of the Year in 2000.
He has been pleased to have had an influence on the development of rice policy in Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Japan, which has helped stabilize rice prices and reduce poverty. Presently, Dr. Timmer maintains his professional affiliation with the American Economic Association, the American Agricultural Economics Association and the honorable society of Phi Beta Kappa. Looking toward to the future, he plans to continuing working from home and writing reviews and book chapters.
