Kira Kanani Seamon Receives The Star Treatment for Excellence in Dance and Photography

A former prodigy in the performing arts who has since found much success in the visual arts, Ms. Seamon has utilized her incredible talent to elevate her community and her craft at-large. Speaking with Star about her unique career path, she elaborates, "I do traditional photography, which means reflections, landscapes, nature and shadows. I love that kind of thing, but I also do my own experimental, avant-garde photography; I'm more known for that. I do kaleidoscope photography of fall foliage, and that's where I really made my name."

Although she has gravitated toward artistic expression throughout her life, Ms. Seamon's professional pursuits in photography was somewhat coincidental in nature. "I started taking photos 20 years ago when I moved from Hawaii to Boston," she tells Star, adding, "I had never seen autumn; Hawaii is a tropical paradise with all of the flowers and plants. But it's year-round, and I never saw deciduous trees turn color. So I wanted to capture it and see it during the winter. I didn't want to lose the image of these orange trees ablaze or these red trees or the birch trees turning yellow."

Ms. Seamon previously dedicated herself to the art of dance, to which she raised her profile among her field through competitions and clever methods of self-publicity. In conversation with Star, she states, "I'm a former national dance champion and a two-time regional dance champion… I was very used to competing and used to knowing that competitions could really turbocharge your career forward, so I had looked to competitions and juried shows as a photographer. I also know that newspaper coverage is really crucial to getting your name out there. I've learned how to do press releases during my time in the dance world… When a [newspaper] editor decides to spend time and space on your art, people really admire that."

Most recently, Ms. Seamon has contributed to the town of Natick, Massachusetts as an artist-in-residence operating out of the Natick Center Cultural District. "That was a dream come true," she emphatically proclaims to Star. "My job was to engage the public with art and to get them excited about the year-end project that I had to do. So I chose to do 'Art in Bloom,' which was invented by the ladies committee over at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and has spread around the world as well as into the suburbs of Boston. So I brought in frame photos that I have taken in addition to vases and flowers so that people can make flower arrangements to interpret, if you will, my art. I also did art projects at community-wide events, including Natick Days and Natick Nights where we had up to four thousand people in attendance."

Ms. Seamon has also provided her artistic endeavors as a conduit to help heal and bolster those in need throughout Natick during this time. She fondly recalls one project that remains a great source of pride, explaining to Star, "After the terrible fire in Downtown Natick that destroyed maybe 15 businesses… I wanted to create a healing event. So I created an art project called 'Helping Hands Equal Healing Hands,' for which I bought posters and encouraged the community to come by my table to draw the outline of their hands. The mothers would hold their hands with their daughters and trace that, too. We even had a little dog put his paw up and we traced that. We gave these to the fire chief, who was so touched and took his time to look at every single handprint. The community was so amazing that I had only bought two posters, which were filled in less than 20 minutes. I actually had to hide them because people kept wanting to do that art project!"

Ms. Seamon's career path has been far from easy, however, as her efforts to become a professional dancer earlier in her life were met with nearly unsurmountable setbacks and challenges. "Dance was my life and my identity," she shares with Star. "I was an extremely athletic kid and that led me to become an extremely athletic dancer. I was dedicating my life to dance and what happened was that I tore my hamstring. I was stuck on gum in the dance studio, if you could believe it, and so my foot was planted but the rest of my body kept moving... Unfortunately, I had five orthopedists, fifteen physical therapists and innumerable personal trainers who could not fix this for me, so they called it a career-ending injury. That was absolutely devastating to me."

However, Ms. Seamon refused to be deterred by her injury, which motivated her to overcome her physical obstacles by going above and beyond simple healing rehabilitation. She passionately recounts to Star, "I was told that I was seeing the most experienced people and that everyone else would have had less experience, so I didn't need to go to them… So I thought, 'The world could give up on you, but you can't give up on yourself.' So I decided I was going to fix it, and I wanted to get subscriptions to high-quality physical therapy journals, but when I tried to buy them, I was told that I had to be a certified health professional… So I said to myself, 'My goodness, I'm going to have to become one of those professionals.' And I did! I embarked upon an ambitious program and became a certified exercise physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine."

Accruing honorable recognitions from Dance Teacher Magazine and Dance Spirit Magazine, Ms. Seamon has strongly advocated for obtaining grants and accolades relevant to various mediums of art. Speaking to the next generation of dancers and photographers, she imparts to Star, "You should enter juried shows and competitions. You can really do well if you place or win an award. I also suggest that you go after grants... People put a lot of stock becoming a grantee."

Hoping to continue exhibiting her photography in museums in the coming years while branching into new regions with 'Art in Bloom,' Ms. Bloom also advises future artists to strive for greatness in her field. "You need to become an "expert fruit picker," in that you should only go for the high fruit and not the low hanging fruit. If I pick tons of low hanging fruit and have a mountain of fruit, maybe each individual accomplishment was not that amazing. However, if I do great work even on a small project in a small town, my eventual mountain of fruit is going to impress people. What that really means is to refine your desire to work, your work ethic and your motivation."
