Dr. Nelson, a renowned physician, scientist and tumor immunologist, is presently a professor of medicine, molecular biology and biochemistry at the University of California Irvine (UCI) since 2016. Affiliated with the university since 2000, he began his career on campus as a member of the NCI designated Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. He later also took on the role of the chief of the division of hematology oncology in 2010. Dr. Nelson formerly excelled as a senior scientist and head of the immunotherapy laboratory at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute between 1995 and 2000.
Some of Dr. Nelson's research as a principal investigator has involved clinical trials concerning therapeutic agents, biomarkers and immunomodulatory interventions. He has also participated with the National Science Foundation-funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training LifeChips program at UCI. As a co-principal investigator and professor, he has focused his efforts on developing technology in order to better examine tumors. Meanwhile, Dr. Nelson's clinical interests have been focused on lymphomas with respect to improvement measures, cancer survivorship and extending quality of life. As a seasoned scientist, he has disseminated many of his research findings by co-authoring articles in various professional journals, as well as abstracts, and has contributed numerous chapters to books.
Deeply devoted to his local community, Dr. Nelson has supported the nonprofit organization Breast Cancer Solutions as a board member since 2016. He has also been active in the same capacity for Habitat for Humanity since 2014. Some of his previous commitments have included serving on the board of Mercy House and as an advisor on behalf of the Community Outreach Cancer Research in Irvine. Additionally, Dr. Nelson enjoyed coaching for AYSO Girls Soccer and Protect Our National Youth Baseball. Prior to entering medical school, he notably served in the Peace Corps as a volunteer between 1977 and 1980.
Dr. Nelson received a Doctor of Medicine at Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) in Portland in 1986. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, from 1986 to 1989, and was a medical oncology fellow and Pfizer immunology research fellow at Stanford University between 1989 and 1995. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Nelson is a board certified oncologist and internal medicine physician through the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Maryland, California and New York.
In support of his career, Dr. Nelson is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where he received a 1994 Merit Award and the American Association of Cancer Research. He is also an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians. Selected for the Sneeden Award from OHSU and the Merck Award in 1986, he later received the C. Ronald Koons, MD, Humanitarian Award in 2018. He was also named to the Top Oncologists by the Consumer's Research Council of America in 2008, has been listed among America's Top Doctors by Castle Connelly every year since 2012. Additionally, Dr. Nelson was a medical honoree of the Southern California Chapter American Cancer Society in 2019.
