In addition to his legal career, Mr. Josephson has taught various courses as a lecturer at Alaska Pacific University and the University of Alaska.
Born in New Jersey, Mr. Josephson became active in politics and local government upon relocating to Alaska after graduating from law school. He was the legislative assistant to the territorial delegate and the U.S. Senator from Alaska, a member of the Alaska House of Representatives in Juneau, the mayor of Anchorage, a two-time member of the Alaska Senate and the co-chairperson of the Joint Federal-State Land Use Planning Commission for Alaska. He also served as an assembly member for the Municipality of Anchorage and sat on various Alaska Senate committees. Mr. Josephson was notably a candidate for U.S. Senate in 1970.
A dedicated civic advocate, Mr. Josephson chaired the South Central Alaska American Red Cross and was the deputy chairperson of the Greater Anchorage Charter Commission. He is also a past president of the Congregation Beth Sholom in Anchorage, having served between 2016 and 2019. Mr. Josephson remains active as a trustee for the Congregation.
Mr. Josephson received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Chicago in 1953 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Catholic University of America in 1960. He has been admitted to practice law by the Alaska Bar Association. After completing his bachelor's degree, he notably served in the U.S. Army in active duty and the Reserves between 1955 and 1957. Mr. Josephson was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Alaska in 2018.
Mr. Josephson has found success as a contributing editor for the Alaska Bar Association newspaper, a columnist for the Anchorage Daily News and a drama critic for Anchorage News. He also served on the editorial board of the Catholic University of America Law Review while pursuing his legal degree. To support his legal career, Mr. Josephson has been a member of the American Bar Association, the Alaska Bar Association and the Anchorage Bar Association. He is also a former arbitrator of the American Arbitration Association.
