Ms. Wood is a retired teacher, caseworker, and communications specialist who, in recent years, established her own successful business, Kat Wood Enterprises. With 24 years of teaching in the public and private school systems in Pennsylvania and Texas, she had also found success as a caseworker for the Montgomery County Board of Assistance and an administrative assistant for the Montgomery County Drug and Alcohol Program in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Ms. Wood ultimately transitioned into broadcasting as a Production Coordinator for Channel 8/KUHT-TV in Houston in 1981. Over the next few years, Ms. Wood had the opportunity to work with several other companies, for which she hosted and produced multiple shows for cable television and supervised floor management, lighting, sound and décor. To serve her community, she host produced her own show called "Access," which covered events for nonprofit organizations.
In 1986, Ms. Wood's career had come full circle when she decided to return to the classroom as a faculty member at San Jacinto College in Houston until 2007. Throughout her illustrious career in Texas, she had maintained part-time appointments as an adjunct instructor of Speech Communications at the University of Houston-Downtown, San Jacinto College, the University of Houston at Clear Lake, Galveston College and North Harris County College, among others. Ms. Wood was also active as an adjunct instructor of Communications at Alvin Community College and hosted their weekly radio community service program on KACC-FM.
Ms. Wood was also recruited as a frequent speaker, lecturer, and consultant in her field and served as a judge at various forensics festivals and speech tournaments. A talented writer, she further flourished as a contributing author and Public Relations Director for Women in Cable TV. Ms. Wood is presently authoring a book about her memories growing up on the Susquehanna River with her grandparents, mother and siblings. Prior to teaching in higher education, she was a Press Assistant for a Houston mayoral candidate.
Influential in her community, Ms. Wood has been a member of the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium's Literary Arts Committee and district textbook selection committee for the South Campus of San Jacinto College. She has also found success as a member of the Pasadena Little Theatre since 1984. Previous commitments to her credit include various volunteer positions with the Boy Scouts of America, her local Little League baseball team, the YMCA junior baseball team and Houston's public school system. Likewise, Ms. Wood was selected as a speaker and liaison in Greater Houston Partners in Progress, which were community programs initiated by First Lady Barbara Bush, so was honored at the "Thank You" event in Washington, D.C.
Highly educated, Ms. Wood earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Preschool Education from West Chester University in 1975. She later obtained a Master of Arts in Speech Communications and Public Relations Management at the University of Houston in 1982. Subsequently, Ms. Wood completed 60 graduate level credits in Educational Leadership at the aforementioned university.
Engaged with various professional organizations relative to her field, Ms. Wood is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the San Jacinto College District Speakers Bureau, the Texas State Troopers Association, the Houston Police Patrolmen's Union Association and the University of Houston Alumni Association. She is also an Honorary Deputy Sheriff of Harris County, TX. Likewise, Ms. Wood was noted as the former President and Public Relations Director of the Women in Theatre Association, later named Theatre Network of Houston.
Ms. Wood was honored as a First Place Winner at the First Annual Healthy Dessert Competition in town. In recognition of her countless community efforts, she was presented with Certificates of Appreciation from the American Heart Association, the U.S. Marine Corps, the Leukemia Association, and the Boy Scouts of America. She also received Letters of Commendation from the Fire Marshal of Houston and other organizations, a Spirit of San Jacinto Award. Ms. Wood has been cited in the Fifth Edition of Who's Who in American Education as well as Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who of American Women, and other editions.
