Richard H. Kohn Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Kohn with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kohn celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Having gained more over 50 years of experience in the fields of history and education, Dr. Kohn became a professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011. Originally hired as an associate professor in 1991, he went on to direct the Triangle Institute for Security Studies, 1992-2000, and to chair the curriculum in peace, war and defense between 1992 and 2006. Prior to becoming emeritus, he served as a board trustee of the National History Center in Washington, D.C. promoting historical scholarship and use of history knowledge in public policy, Dr. Kohn focused his own career on American military history, with research on the origins of the American military establishment, the connection between national security, the military, policy and strategy, as well as presidential war leadership, the American experience of war, and civil-military relations.

After completing his doctorate IN 1968, Dr. Kohn began teaching at the City College of New York as an assistant professor of history. He subsequently taught at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, as Harold Keith Johnson visiting professor of military history at the U.S, Anny Military History Institute and Anny War College, as an adjunct professor at the National War College and as Omar N. Bradley professor of strategic leadership at the U.S, Army War College and Dickinson College. Additionally, Dr. Kohn was chief of air force history for the U.S. Air Force in Washington between 1981 and 1991.

Among Dr. Kohn's numerous other leadership roles, he served as an expert witness in a U,S. Indian Claims Commission, as a Pulitzer Prize juror, and as a visiting scholar of strategic studies at Johns Hopkins University in the school of advanced international studies. Moreover, he was the director for the Triangle Institute for Security Studies and a member of the board of visitors for Air University, U.S. Air Force. He was elected to the Council of the American Historical Association in 1986. Dr. Kohn has remained active as a consultant to various defense and historical agencies, advisory committees, and organizations since 1972, including chairing the research and collections management advisory committee of Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, and serving as a congressionally-appointed member of the independent review panel for the Defense Department's Quadrennial Defense Review in 2010. More recently he joined the Presidential Counselors for the National World War II Museum in 2015.

Widely published in his field, Dr. Kohn authored the book Eagle and Sword: The Federalists and the Creation of the Military Establishment in America, 1783-1802 in 1975 and was one of the co-authors of The Exclusion of Black Soldiers from the Medal of Honor in World War II in 1997. He also co-edited several group oral history interviews, including Air Superiority in World War II and Korea published in 1983, Air Interdiction in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, in 1986, and Strategic Air Warfare in 1988, Another co-edited volume, Soldiers and Civilians in 2001 discussed the results of a large study of the gap between military and civilian opinions of national security issues. He was editor of a reprint series "The American Military Experience" in 1979 and edited The US Military under the Constitution of the United States, 1789-1989, published in 1990 as the first American contribution to the series of volumes of the International Commission of Military History. Additionally, Dr. Kohn has published numerous scholarly articles in books and professional journals, and opinion pieces in more popular venues.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Kohn graduated from Harvard College (A.B. 1962), then completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in history at the University of Wisconsin in 1964 and 1968, respectively. Aligned with several organizations pertinent to his career, Dr. Kohn has maintained his affiliation with the American Antiquarian Society, the Air Force Historical Foundation and numerous national, state, and local historical societies and learned or professional organizations. He served as an elected member of the Council of the American Historical Association and in a variety of capacities for the Society for Military History, including as president 1989-1993.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kohn was recognized with numerous honors, beginning with the Binkley-Stephenson Award from the Organization of American Historians in 1973. He later received a President's Award from the Air Force Historical Foundation in 1987, an Organizational Excellence Award and Exceptional Civilian Service Award from the U.S. Department of the Air Force in 1990 and 1991, respectively, the Edward F, Miller History Prize from the Naval War College in 2005 and, among others, a Herbert Feis Award from the American Historical Association (2008) and the Samuel Eliot Morison prize from the Society for Military History (2009). Among his many invited papers, presentations, lectures, and comments, some later published, was the Society for Military History's George C. Marshall lecture, delivered at the American Historical Association annual meeting in 2004. In retirement from UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Kohn continues to consult, publish his research and to teach and lecture on occasion.
