Throughout his formative years, Dr. Kyle consistently exhibited an affinity for science. Initially resolving to pursue a career in biological academia, he soon recognized his propensity for focusing upon social issues in the natural sciences and environmental education. His scholarly endeavors have always focused upon enhancing students' scientific literacy, preparing students for life in a critical democracy, self-and social empowerment, and social transformation.
Dr. Kyle initiated his edificatory ventures by enrolling at Le Moyne College (Syracuse, NY), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He subsequen tly relocated to Iowa City, IA and obtained a Master of Science in Science Education from The University of Iowa. Thriving under the tutelage of educators at the aforementioned institution, Dr. Kyle earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education with an emphasis in environmental science.
In 1982, Dr. Kyle began his professorial career as a faculty member at the University of Texas at Arlington until 1984. For more than a decade, he retained the same responsibilities through the University of Connecticut and, afterwards, Purdue University. In 1996, he accepted the E. Desmond Lee Family Professor of Science Education position at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Since 1987, Dr. Kyle has collaborated with science educators in several sub-Saharan African nations, most notably a multi-year collaborative venture amongst universities and researchers in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Norway and the US, with a focus upon generating knowledge and research methodologies oriented toward exploring and promoting access to a socially responsible science, mathematics, and technology education.
Regarding his extraprofessional endeavors, Dr. Kyle has published extensively and serves on editorial boards. He has served as Editor of Journal of Research in Science Teaching (January 1994 through May 1999), the official journal of NARST – A worldwide organization for improving science teaching and learning through research. In 2003, Dr. Kyle's scholarship was recognized by NARST as having been the co-author of one of the 13 most influential articles published in JRST during its first 40 years (1963-2003). Dr. Kyle served as the Executive Director of NARST from April 2007 through December 2018. Presently, he serves as a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovation and Transformative STEM Education, hosted by Lagos State University, Nigeria (July 2020 through 2023).
The hallmark of Dr. Kyle's work is that it is collaborative, grounded in community-based initiatives, and oriented toward empowerment and social transformation.
