A native of Pakistan, Prof. Khan spent the first three years of his career as an engineer and research consultant before immigrating to England in 2002. Hired by Bournemouth University as a lecturer, he continually progressed, earning roles that included service as the associate dean of research and enterprise in the school of design, engineering and computing between 2008 and 2010. Presently, Prof. Khan is a tenured professor of design, engineering and computing. Additionally, he has played an active role as a member of several committees since 2007.
Renowned for his expertise, Prof. Khan has led the NanoCorr, Energy and Modelling research group at Bournemouth University since 2015, through which he has made several significant contributions. As a seasoned scientist, he has successfully developed multidisciplinary research in wear-corrosion synergy, nano-coating incorporating tribo-corrosion issues, thermodynamics and other areas of the field, and continues to conduct international leading research. Throughout the course of his career, Prof. Khan has also collaborated with a multitude of visiting professors and fellows and collaborative research with the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, and such global organizations as Schaeffler Technologies AG & Company. Likewise, he has maintained numerous international affiliations, including with the NASA Materials Testing and Corrosion Control Branch in the U.S. and the National Institute of Technology in India.
To prepare for his career, Prof. Khan received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at NWFP University of Engineering and Technology in Pakistan in 1992. He later completed a Master of Science in engineering at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai in 2000 and a doctorate degree at Bournemouth University in 2006. He is a chartered engineer through the Engineering Council of the U.K. Prof. Khan has contributed over 100 Scopus indexed scholarly articles in various peer-reviewed journals as a result of his research, including the Journal of Tribology International, Tribology Letters and Energy Conversion & Management. He notably holds five patents in his field, including for a solar energy capture and for a telescopic electrochemical cell.
To remain aware of developments in the field, Prof. Khan contributes as a member of several industry-related organizations. Among them, he is notably a senior fellow of the HEA and a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He is also an active member of the International Association of Engineers and several other professional societies. He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Energy Storage Committee. Prof. Khan has been recognized for his outstanding achievements with a James Clayton Award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2008, a Collaborative Research Award from Tsinghua University in 2016, and, among other awards, a Vice Chancellor Staff Award in Advancing Knowledge from Bournemouth University in 2018.
