Dr. Wilson has long been affiliated with Monash University in Melbourne. A former clinical associate professor for 10 years, he was subsequently named as an adjunct clinical professor in 2006. He has since garnered a reputation as a pioneer with known expertise in the field of telemedicine.
Prior to his current commitments, Dr. Wilson was an assistant physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for several years. Likewise, he excelled as the director of the National Asthma Council in Melbourne between 2000 and 2008, has served as a consultant in his field throughout Australia and abroad. Additionally, Dr. Wilson has been actively engaged as a member of the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee, where he also served as the director of physician training.
As a seasoned scientist, Dr. Wilson has extensively studied airway inflammation and remodeling, the use of cytokine therapy for the treatment of lung disease, pharmacological treatments in cystic fibrosis lung disease, and gene modulator therapy in cystic fibrosis. In 2001, he notably authored the book, titled "Airway Remodeling." Dr. Wilson has also researched various forms of technology with respect to video-conferencing for delivering care programs and electronic health records throughout various medical systems. As a result of his years of study, Dr. Wilson has disseminated his findings by contributing articles to multiple professional journals.
An alumnus of the University of Melbourne, Dr. Wilson received a Bachelor of Science in physics and information technology, with honors, in 1975, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1980, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1989. His physician training, which focused on intensive care and respiratory medicine, was completed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Dr. Wilson is an elected fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians. To support his professional career, he has served as an executive member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Wilson is now President, The Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Between 1989 and 2002, Dr. Wilson was fortunate to secure multiple grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council. Celebrated for his success, he received a John Sands Medal from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2018 and a President's Medal from the Australian Medical Association in 2019. Dr. Wilson was also made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018, which recognized him for meritorious service.
